I think that the matter will be resolved by mid-2015. If you take a critical look at the components of the Jabiru engine, you will find that they are quite up to standard.
The failures I have seen can, for the most part be sheeted straight back to the assembly procedures documented by Jabiru. Basically, the fault lies not with the bits the engine is made of, but with the ignorance of engine assembly by Jabiru. All that is needed is for a qualified , experienced engine assembler, and here I mean a person holding a CASA 'Engines" certification plus practical experience, to go to the Jabiru factory; study current engine assembly procedures to identify the deficiencies in Jabiru's technique, then write an instructional document which follows standard industry procedures.
The main problem with Jabiru's assembly procedure is that they direct the use of silicone between surfaces that have to be torqued down. You just can't do that.

My beloved, Old Ma Emu, bought me an adventure activity gift for Christmas last year, and, finally, this week we made the booking for a scenic flight in a Tiger Moth.
As I write this, it's Saturday morning and from the sky outside I can hear Airborne Aviation's Tiger groping for altitude as it climbs out of Camden Airport. That'll be me on the 21st!
Anyone know the fuel load a Moth can carry if the people holes are filled with 125 kg in the front and about 100 kg pulling knobs and levers in the back?
Based on that, how much of my 30 minute flight will have to be done in glide with the engine at idle?

I hope Brumby Aircraft aren't victims of this scam.China businessman introduces a Foreign company, gets his hands on those grants in various forms, some of them very lucrative, he conveniently forgets to mention them to the Foreigners and doesn't give a toss about the actual business that was just the vehicle he needed to get the grants. In many cases he actually wants the business side of it to fail, a headache he doesn't need now that he has his hands on the cream, leaving the Foreigners dead in the water.OME

I wonder what would happen if someone referred a CASA doctor's decision to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Oh come on! Get real!Cardiologists may understand the heart, but do they understand heart function in a rarefied atmosphere at altitude and how that may interact with say, a respiratory problem.Peter
"rarefied atmosphere" All I wanted to do was potter around in a basic two-seater, below 10,000 in Day VMC.

That's a valid comment, but a side issue to my point.. Some might be very easy but they get into strife (Hempel case) and then we are all worse off. NevMy point is this - if the data which are obtained are the results of accepted procedures and suitably calibrated instrumentation, then they indicate the same thing to a specialist in the particular field, the general practitioner, or the informed layman. ECG data are not something that are open to widely diverse (subjective) interpretation.
On the point of a GP over-riding a specialist, why then would a GP refer a patient to a specialist if the GP was going to ignore the results of the specialist's examinations?

[Gee it's hard to correctly match the plural word 'data' with the plural form of the associated verb, or when using a pronoun, without making the sentence sound wrong!]

It seems to me that Dr Navathe exhibited a common failure of non-Western peoples, which is the inability to apply Discretion. To them, the Rule is the Rule and must never be questioned.
I'm at the other end of the scale of pilots that Dr Liddell refers to. I want to be able to fly "on occasion". You can appreciate my delight when CASA introduced the Class 3 Medical a short while ago. Basically, if a pilot was medically fit enough to drive a motor vehicle, he/she was fit enough to fly an airplane (albeit with not too onerous restriction).
I recently had to undergo a Heavy Vehicle Driver's medical, during which the doctor found that I had a slight heart murmur. I was examined by a cardiologist, and after a Stress Test, was passed as OK. The stupid thing is that my CASA licence is suspended pending a Class 2 medical, BUT
1. I am considered medically sound enough to drive a road train up
2. I am considered medically sound enough to fly an RAA registered airplane over provided I remain clear of any CTAs.
3. I cannot lift the suspension on my CASA licence until I am examined by a DAME, to whom I will give a copy of the cardiologist's report, plus copies of the ECG records.
The DAME ( being of Western origin) will no doubt forward this information onto CASA Medicals, who will clip my wings.
If you have ever done one of these Stress Test you will know that they stick a lot of electrodes to you chest to obtain the data they need. My test showed that I have an "inverted T-wave at lead 3". According to this article : http://content.onlinejacc.org/article.aspx?articleid=1119521 from the American College of Cardiologists, " Isolated T wave inversion in asymptomatic adults is usually a normal variant. "
I wonder if CASA's Medical section would accept that, and apply discretion, or if they will be automatons and stick to the rule that any ECG change is a failure?

AN bolts are OK for wing and strut attachment. Messrs Cessna, Piper, Maule & Co have been using them since Pontius was a pilot.
If you require information to determine the size codes (eg AN4-5A) for your bolts, PM me and I'll arrange to send you a 35Mb pdf file that will be of great use to you during your restoration.

Are you using a heated print bed, and if so, how did you make the heating pad.
Just a tip: If you are using a heated pad, fit an auto horn relay using the output from the RAMPS board as the current to pull the switch. That way you can run more than 12V through your pad.

I have just undergone a medical to obtain an authority to drive a public passenger vehicle (I suppose the medical will also cover my licence for driving anything from a golf cart to a road train). The doctor noticed that I had a slight heart murmur, so he sent me to a cardiologist for a stress test. I passed the test, but there was an slight abnormality in my ECG (Inverted T wave, if you know about these things). The doctor passed me as medically fit.
So now I can drive a 5 - 10 tonne bus with up to 60 children on board in any sort of traffic, anywhere in Australia.
However ....
CASA won't let me fly a 500kg AUW two seater aircraft with one passenger (who has been advised that I have not had a comprehensive aviation medical) as there has been a change in my ECG.
If I want to fly, I must pass a Class 2 Aviation medical conducted by a DAME. What will the DAME do? Send me for a stress test by the cardiologist who did my PPV test. I suppose I could save time by taking the report of the first test along to the DAME, who will no doubt pass me as fit to fly.
It's bloody crazy!

Yeah, I've got a Prusa i3 with an 8x8x8" print space. I'm printing ABS plastic, but still trying to iron out some problems. I assembled the printer myself from a kit which cost me about $800 landed from the USA.

I was in a motorcycle shop today and saw these:
They are plugs that are put into the ends of exhaust pipes to seal the cylinders to prevent moisture entering while the engine is standing unused for some time.
Here is a link for those of you who would like to buy some for your plane:

Don't forget that MEK is classed as a "Dangerous Good", so if you have it freighted from anywhere you will pay a premium on the freight cost. As Dazza says, MEK is used to prime plastic piping, so you could get it from Bunnings etc, but perhaps the red dye would not suit your application.I get MEK from Barrel Chemicals in Gympie...they do freight all over the country.AND MAKE SURE YOU READ THE MSDS!!!!!!!

You should be able to find bulk chemical suppliers who can supply you with 20 litres of MEK. Just look in the Yellow Pages. MEK is not peculiar to aviation, so don't think you have to source it from one of the aviation supply companies. They've just bought it from a general supplier and whacked their profit margin on top.
Just remember to consult the MSDS sheet before you play with MEK (or any other chemical). It can be carcinogenic and it will dry the oils from your skin and cause the skin on your hands to crack if you don't wear gloves. You need to consider protecting your lungs, too.
