The problem with the 2 Max crashes is that the trim got so far nose down that the roller coaster manual recovery method was virtually impossible due to the low altitude of both aircraft. Those trim wheels rotate at a pretty fast rate when the system is doing it. I don't know how many revolutions are required for a 1 degree change but I think it is quite a lot. At only 6000 feet & heading towards the ground at over 400 knots there is not much time to do anything.

The hole is not only getting deeper but wider as well.

I use Aeroshell W100 plus for the reasons mentioned & then looked up the details. It is not much more expensive than the standard W100. My last case was about $10.00 a quart. I assume it works as stated on the tin but I rarely go more than a few days without flying, other than when there is a run of really bad weather or I am away somewhere.

In simple terms Boeing f!#*@ed up big time by putting profit before safety. They are now trying desperately to minimise the disaster they created. Nev said this way back. "Boeing HAD a good reputation. Not any more. You cannot buy a reputation when you have thrown it away"

When I set up my business in Noosaville in 2005 I didn't have an Australian Super fund but I had 3 based in NZ. My accountant told me those didn't count so I immediately took one out with my Bank & chucked 20 grand in it which was my profit from year 1. The returns were mediocre & the fees ridiculous. I then set up a SMSF & transferred the bank funds into it. The documentation bureaucracy is over the top and the tax returns and financial reporting incredibly complex but after the initial setup costs there are no fees to pay except for annual reporting. Now it is converted to a pension fund & I still put money in as well as taking it out & there is no tax, but there is a catch. The tax office charge a $370.00 fee for not having to check a tax return. Pathetic.

I have no knowledge of your brothers individual circumstances but he was entitled by law to get all of the superannuation he paid during the labour government scheme back.'The NZ super was repaid to all those who wanted it back. Some chose to continue with a super scheme and it was transferred to that."MY Bro got Nothing from it, & his employer said they would Not accept any super scheme, in any shape or form. (after the governments fiasco).
Also his Union didn't help either with the super, and more importantly, not a cent towards his funeral.

My Australian wife gets a NZ pension because she lived & worked there for 20 years. She now lives in her country of birth where she worked & paid tax for more than 30 years & gets nothing from Australia. I also paid an enormous amount of tax in Australia but get nothing because I saved my money and invested wisely. I did the same in NZ. When you reach retirement age in Australia you are in the lucky country when you have squandered your earnings & qualify for a pension because of that.So you think a pension and an Australian wife are both benefits?-

There are probably a few Lancasters that I reckon could be restored back to flying condition. There is one at the Museum of Transport &Technology in Auckland that I remember seeing in the 1970s. It was outside but complete with everything & looked very restorable. It is now inside and looks like new. It is maintained to working condition. It is a late model built in 1945 after VE day & eventually went to the French Navy in 1951, then sent to New Caledonia. The French gave it to NZ as a tribute to the Kiwis who served in Bomber Command. That was before the Frogs became persona non grata after the Rainbow Warrior sinking.

The NZ super was repaid to all those who wanted it back. Some chose to continue with a super scheme and it was transferred to that. Transients and those who didn't care and those they couldn't find did not get a refund but it can still be applied for if you can prove details. I always had a super scheme with my employer so it didn't affect me. There is no compulsory super in NZ but everyone from billionaires to paupers gets the pension. I even get a NZ pension along with my Australian wife. We get nothing from Australia as the value of our assets is too high. In fact everyone in the EU & UK gets a pension when they reach the appropriate age. Not so here and we are supposed to be the lucky country

There are numerous proportional representation systems and the Australian preferential system has to be one of the worst. When someone (now gone thank goodness) who gets only 19 primary votes can get in to the senate via preferences and then spend our money flying around the country to white supremacist rallys is one very simple reason why the system needs a major overhaul. The ballot paper is absurdly long and confusing for many. A lot of people think that you have to vote as specified on the party's "how to vote card". A lot of candidates had no policies at all except for the 1 thing they decided to stand for. Even palmer who spent $60 million on advertising didn't have any documented policies. Labor & the LNP may have Aviation policies but few care about this so when in power they do nothing anyway. The Libs are back but still have no plan for renewable energy. Hopefully people will begin to realise in the next 3 years that voting for a short term benefit could backfire spectacularly as we edge ever closer to bigger climate issues. At least Abbots electorate realised having a denier as their representative was not good at all.

The Garmin looks pretty good and the idea of not having to make any payments when not in use is good too. I have a Spot Gen 3 Tracker & find it very good. I use it nearly every flight. I am not interested in 2 way messaging but like the real time tracker that my wife can see where I am every 5 minutes as it is overlaid on Google Maps. It also provides altitude. There is a check in function which sends a current location email message whenever I press the button, also a customised predetermined message use usually after landing. The other one is Help which sends messages to a number of people you choose that you are OK but require assistance. All my flights can be retrieved to check details at any later date. They added some maintenance cost this year which annoyed me a bit and it is now over $300.00 with the drop in exchange rate with the $US. Maybe not approved but AMSA is notified if SOS is activated so they have the coordinates & S&R is still activated approval or not.

The report states he had a restless nights sleep, was recovering from a mild cold and didn't eat breakfast. That's the I, possibly the S, F and E missing from his IMSAFE. He was not fit to fly but did so anyway and was lucky to engage the autopilot just before he fell unconscious. A pretty poor effort, it could have ended in disaster.

They might make good artificial reefs. The fish that inhabit them could then claim they live in the most expensive apartments bad money bought.

Looks fine to me but I still think it best to turn the electric pump off once you have sufficient height to get back to the field. The facet cube electronic pumps are very reliable and wear is negligible. But, you are still adding stress to the electrical system unnecessarily. It all depends on what other electrical items are running and how much your alternator can deliver constantly without getting too hot.
Turn it on when you are low, or coming in to land or the engine falters. Otherwise the mechanical pump will just do its job.

As the Events calendar is not yet up, I'll add it here. Grafton Aero Club is hosting the 7th Wings and Wheels the day after the Winter Solstice this year to hopefully ensure better weather. Come & join us. No landing fees, great food, lots to look at. Details at graftonaeroclub.com/wing-and-wheels

And Boeings hole just got a bit deeper.

It does seem like the crash definitely caused the fire and ruptured at least one fuel tank. When the tail smacks the tarmac after the bounce there is a shower of sparks & then fire. Passenger video shows a long river of fire as the aircraft stops

I'd say about 5 minutes from start up to takeoff. I have never actually measured it so I will tomorrow. I just make sure that CHT & Oil temp are in the green before takeoff. Probably about 2 minutes from touchdown to shutdown outside the hangar.

It depends on the type of pump I imagine. I use a Facet cube solid state electronic pump which delivers 1.5-3 PSI in series with the mechanical pump. Fuel flows through it unimpeded when it is turned off. There is very little wear as the mechanism is a free moving magnet that is pulsed multiple times a second, hence the distinctive brrrrr sound. I also have a similar but larger 4-6 psi one to transfer fuel from the wing tanks into the main tank.I don't have an electric pump so I'm unsure if they normally run in series or parallel with the mechanical pump?If in series, that is fine as you have flow through the electric pump to the mechanical keeping it cool.
If in parallel, could it be that the reason it is turned off is that lack of flow through it makes it hot?
The mechanical pump is effectively pumping the fuel and therefore the electric is dead heading. Ok for short periods but it will get hot after a period of time.

Correct, I'd forgotten that there was a fuel pressure gauge on the Archer. That was always a check when changing tanks very 1/2 hour or so.Those 172s don't have a fuel pump. I think you'll find that the Archer 2 does. Even an old Cherokee 180 that I used to fly.-

Right of Way?
in AUS/NZ General Discussion

The weather and what is happening at the destination can often change after you plan your flight. The conditions may be completely different when you arrive so you must be able to adapt straight away and make a change as required. At an uncontrolled aerodrome you should announce your imminent arrival at about the 10 mile mark with your location relative to the aerodrome and the ETA in minutes past the hour. If there is traffic make a 3 mile call then if you know the established circuit by then, a joining call. If you are joining straight in on final you don't have right of way when the circuit is already established. Otherwise overfly 500 feet above circuit height, check the windsock and announce joining. You should let down to circuit height on the dead side and preferably join crosswind, slow down on downwind & set up your approach speed and descent on base & touch down perfectly on the piano keys. Getting it wrong is just being careless.
Students often get things wrong but it is a very poor instructor who does not make appropriate corrections when radio calls are incorrectly made.
