  1. An 11 year old Boeing 737 NG has skidded off the runway in Istanbul today and broken into 3 pieces killing one person & injuring 157. The SBS documentary of 2011 highlighted the poor quality of the fuselage ribs made by a 3rd party supplier after Boeing employees who had been ignored by management became whistle blowers. They were sacked of course. The doco noted that 3 737NGs had broken up after hard landings and although there were no injuries, highlighted the fact that this had not happened in previous 737s or indeed other models. There will be a lot more scrutiny over this now due to the current state of affairs at Boeing.

  2. This is the 8th annual Wings and Wheels Open Day hosted by Grafton Aero Club. It is free for everyone, exhibitors and visitors alike. In 2019 we had around 35 aircraft, hundreds of motor vehicles from vintage, classic, sports, race, touring and custom/rod cars, motorcycles, stationary engines, model aircraft etc and 2-3000 visitors. Food and drink will be available on site with morning tea consisting of home made cakes savouries etc in the clubhouse and BBQs outside with coffee, cold drinks and icecreams as well. The atmosphere is casual with people able to wander about and get up close to exhibits. Marshals will control engine startups and taxying though for the safety of all. Donations will go to a local charity, yet to be determined. Last year we raised $1,700.00 for the Oncology Unit of Grafton Base Hospital.

  3. Interesting. The front strut looks like some sort of braided carbon fibre or kevlar. No mention of the battery weight or endurance. Efficient looking wing. I wonder what the L/D is. Not sure about tasting the pilot seat though. The Czech English translation is better than most Chinglish translations however.

  4. I fitted LED globes to my nav lights just a few weeks ago. Globes are bayonet type and went straight in.

The increase in brightness was phenomenal.

Now question: I have twin Hella spots for my landing light. Does anyone know if an LED replacement Is available?

    Thanks

Aeroled produce drop in replacements for standard PAR 36 landing lights, both certified and non certified. You can probably get bulbs for your Hellas unless they are sealed beam type but be wary and get the good ones as per the video OME posted. If they are get the model number or diameter and search on line.

  5. The American institution of Managers rising to become CEO "AND" Chairman of the Board smells like corporate corruption. IMHO the Board should be completely independent of the company's operations. In effect the CEO is the Boards sole employee and has to answer to the Board for the operational performance of the company. Almost 50 years ago our company's Chief internal Auditor was always stressing an "adequate division of duties" to reduce the possibility of corrupt practices, fraud etc. Where the CEO and Chairman are one and the same as is the case in many American companies it is easy to see that this process is severely weakened.

Now with Muilenberg gone, originally as Chairman and latterly as CEO, guess who is now CEO, Calhoun the existing Chairman. Boeing separated the roles in October when Mulenberg was stripped of his chairmanship & Calhoun took over. Now with Muilenberg gone Boeing is back to its old ways.

Boeing "Too big to Fail" like GM will get bailed out but any trust is gone & the benefactor can only be Airbus.

  6. Yes Kiwi, get used to it. GST in NZ abolished all stamp duties, sales taxes, death duties etc overnight but there is an extra level of government here which means nothing ever happens overnight & every state & territory has different laws. The states greedily hang on to stamp duties especially on property & vehicle sales as it is a large part of their revenue while whingeing that they are not getting a big enough slice of the GST revenue.

Simple solution - get rid of the states & we become 1 big happy (or unhappy if you are a pollie with a vested interest) mob. It'll never happen though for the pollie reason indicated.

  7. My default is Whats New (All) and all the posts are in chronolgical order, read and unread. The unread posts may appear down the page if I have read more recent ones.

Worked it out. The What's new page URL I saved yesterday has changed with .../2804/. Yesterday it was .../86/. Both work but .../2804/ is in chronological order.

  8. I have LED strobes and they use less than half an amp (6 watts). The flash controller is in the wingtip. There is no radio interference.

Aviation LED landing lights usually are less than half the wattage of incandescent lights with much higher lumens. Manufacturers of incandescent landing lights quote the candle power or candellas which is the concentrated power not the light output. For example a 100 watt PAR36 has 1500 lumens & 60,000 peak candellas compared to a 45 watt LED which has 4500 lumens & 65000 peak candellas. The only reason for radio interference is due to poor installation. Follow the manufacturers installation procedures and you won't have problems. It may not just be a matter of replacing the bulbs as often LED landing lights have switchable settings such as a Wig Wag function, both on or L/R on.

Apart from reduced power requirements LEDs don't suffer from vibration issues so last 50,000 hours or more so will outlast the airframe.

  9. Not a biggie but "What's new (all)" threads are not in chronological order based on latest post. "What's new (unread)" are in chronological order as are posts in "Latest activity". I noticed this yesterday when posting and the thread stayed way down in the list but did appear at the top in unread.

  10. That's right, most of the time flying you see no other aircraft except when getting close to an aerodrome, an area of convergence. I remember listening to a speech by Tom Neil a Battle of Britain veteran who said most of the time during the battle they would go up looking for Luftwaffe and never see a thing. When they did it was absolute chaos.

  11. I have a standard Pilot hard cover log book which I keep at home and my aircraft hard cover log book which is kept in the aircraft as is required. Both have all my flights logged in them except if I fly another aircraft, only the pilots logbook is completed. I can't be bothered with electronic logs. I've scanned most of the aircraft log book for proof etc when I have made changes. I could do this with my Pilot log book too but haven't bothered. Anyway my pilot logs predate by decades electronic inventions.

  12. Foxbats are easy to fly and cheaper to run than 172s but I think anyone who is training to become a commercial pilot needs to begin on a slightly more complex and conventional aircraft. The foxbats throttle position is weird down by your left thigh and the overhead manual flap also not very ergonomic. Plus no mixture etc. I'd go for the 172 every day. There is little point going for RPL if you intend to go commercial.
