  1. Before I started real flying, I was building a full cockpit sim based on the Beechcraft Baron. I built and interfaced the controls and gauges. I credit the sim with helping me get familiar with what a final approach should look like. It also taught me a bit about radio procedures. Of course flying for real was quite different, but the sim gave me a head start on things. Since I started real flying, the sim fell into disuse and I didn't finish building it. After a while, I disassembled it to reclaim the floor space.
  2. Oooh!, I think I have a splinter ...Ahh, skeptic, I didn't see your post before I pressed send :-)
  3. I'm quite happy to have "Big Brother" watching me. Big Brother has called me up on the radio several times to alert me to converging or conflicting traffic that I wasn't aware of and in doing so, probably avoided me having a real bad day. In the area that I fly, there is a LOT of training type traffic and a LOT of scenery to visit which a LOT of planes do visit. I like having the extra pair of eyes watching out for me.
  4. Sunshine coast of Brissy. The weather is great in winter and summer. Sure we get some ordinary days, but ... Add to that there is a LOT of G class airspace around there. Plenty of airfields to visit or keep your plane at. And scenery by the shipload, including whale watching in the season. Preferred place to hangar the plane? Watts Bridge for sure. Easy access, not much traffic or wildlife to trouble you, great social calendar and it seems to be the main meeting place in the area when people go flying, they often drop into BVSAC for a cuppa and a chat. VERY friendly residents on the field. Reasonable hangar rents and membership fees. No students (much to speak of) or meat bombs. No obstructions on the approaches and plenty of options if you have an EFATO. What's not to like?
  5. It is also arguable that Reagan and his minions committed treason by arranging with a hostile government to rig the election that got him into power. He and his people arranged for the Iranians to refuse to negotiate with Jimmy Carter over the hostages. Reagan also sold weapons to a hostile government (Iran) and used the proceeds to fund the Contras in Nicaragua. In a similar vein, Nixon did a deal with the North Vietnamese to stall the peace talks to sway the US election his way, another act of treason by Republicans. Then the whole Republican party wrote a letter to a hostile government (Iran again) telling them not to negotiate a nuclear weapons ban with Obama. Why? Just because they hate Obama with a hysterical frothing irrational hatred. Finally, the members of which party have entered into a written pact with a non-elected person (Grover Norquist) to NEVER increase taxes, no matter what? You guessed it, the Republicans again. Swearing an oath to work against the interests of your country is treason IMHO.
  6. Yes, they did do tests with crash test dummies and one of them went through the net at one stage.
  7. Hmmm, I think I've seen that pose before!
  8. For a bit of a giggle, look up The Betoota Advocate.
  9. Interesting scenario. If you thought that with a bit of a squeeze you could get it back on the runway, (in the same direction) would you consider using a sideslip to lose height rapidly?
  10. Unfortunately FH, WE don't pick the candidates, the parties do. WE have zero input into which douches and turds are put up for election. The ones who DO have a say are the ones who bankroll the parties' election campaigns. So we get candidates that represent the interests of the 1%, NOT ours or the Nation's.
  11. OK, Time to tell this story on myself: We had just landed at William Creek and I was in need of a bladder dump, so I found a couple of nice trees near the refuelling bowser. As I walked back to the plane I turned around and there were two 20-something female pilots about half a step away from me wanting a weather report for Leigh Creek! I flustered and stammered that we hadn't come that way. After answering their weather questions I pulled up to the bowser only to discover yet another 20-something lurking near the refuelling bowser! Not many discreet places to "water the bushes" out there...
  12. We went for a flight up to Double Island Point yesterday to look for whales. Saw quite a few, but for some reason the right wing cam wasn't recording, so missed most of the footage. On a side note, two wallies decided to have an on-air blue about procedures and regulations at Gympie. They tied up 126.7 (which was already very busy) for quite some time. I suggested they have their discussion on the ground rather than over the radio and all went quiet after that. It was pretty unedifying stuff.
  13. THAT's why GG is on my "ignore" list.
  14. HEY! Isn't this supposed to be a "Photo thread for the heck of it"? How did it become "Let's all have a whinge about TV licenses"?
  15. Again, not my last flight, but the next installment of the Ouback Adventure..
  16. All our manufacturing jobs sent overseas: Not too mediocre there. Have a look at the youth unemployment and underemployment figures: Not to mediocre there. What about job security especially for those who have to support a mortgage or be tossed out on the street: Not too mediocre there, but as long as we have cheap airfares, all's well....
  17. I re-edited the Ayers Rock video and submitted it for a video competition. You can find it here. I Love Travel Video Contest This version is a bit shorter and better...
  18. Kasper: It is the modern reality and it isn't unique to our organisation and magazine. Every day we get less for more and we see the overpaid execs at the top getting fatter and fatter paychecks. Hmmm, is there a connection there? Wasn't "Trickle-down economics" supposed to be the magic pudding, the tide that "lifted all boats"??? Andy: Your logic makes no sense at all; When consumption goes down, put the price up! Yep that will encourage more people to buy the item! Is there another way? Yep, there are plenty, starting with finding out what the consumers want, then maybe putting the production UP instead of down so that you get economies of scale ... and there are many others. These are not NEW innovations, but it seems they are beyond a lot of business people these days who seem obsessed with costs and profits rather than product quality.
  19. Skippy: Yes, I was originally told by the aircraft dealer that I could definitely NOT substitute BUT, today I spoke to him again and he is now saying that if it has the same root part number and the same specs then it can be substituted. All this happened after I posted. So yes, it seems you are correct. BTW, not quite sure which bit you were referring to about the foot in mouth.
  20. If an aircraft has just landed but not yet vacated the runway, what is the advantage of lining up and waiting at the threshold? As someone else pointed out, this puts you at risk of someone landing on top of you. You won't be able to take off any earlier doing this and if you miss seeing a non radio equipped aircaft on base, you would force them to go around, assuming they see you lining up. As the other poster said, line up and then go straight into your take off roll. Be ready to take off before you line up. I have seen people line up and wait, and from the perspective of being on late downwind or base it is a bit disconcerting if they don't radio their intentions.
  21. My two cents worth: If you own an LSA, you HAVE to use the filter designated by the manufacturer of your airplane. To do otherwise legally puts you in the E-LSA category. In my situation, the filter is not available anywhere in Oz and I have to have them shipped out by the manufacturer. The part they use is an Audi/Volkswagen part, but is not carried by any dealers here is Australia. Grrr!
  22. Yeah, well that includes me. I have tried reading it online but the format is hopelessly small, especially if I try to read it on my iPad mini. Another sterling success story of doing things based on price rather than the best outcome. I guess that's the world we live in; we don't try to make the best widgets anymore, we only try to make the most profitable widgets.
  23. Google "Crisis Capital" this is the way that the very rich get very much richer.
  24. Engineer: The glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
  25. G: As usual, you just nailed it with the pics. Well done.
