BC0979 Posted November 7 Posted November 7 I examined the POH and there is no mention of SLIPS WITH FLAPS EXTENDED as prohibited, only acrobatics are prohibited. I will need to practice this for my upcoming certification checkride. Will you please share your experience with this maneuver. Thank you.
Neil_S Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Hi BC0979, I have done sideslipping in my Savannah S many times. Doing it without flaps extended is best as you can get a great descent rate and don't have to worry about VFE. But I have also done it many times with one stage of flap, but kept below 60knots VFE. Remember that while sideslipping your pitot tube is not aligned with the airflow, so the airspeed reading will not be very accurate. I do it to lose any minor excess of height on final, as I usually just use one stage of flap when landing. I don't really see the point of sideslipping with full flap as the plane is very draggy and will descend at a steep angle, so I don't do it. HTH Cheers, Neil 1 1
facthunter Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Where you have very effective flap and an already draggy slow Plane there's NO benefit whatever doing it. Just Introducing a Potential higher risk situation with an excess ROD and control at Low speeds (especially if the Air is not Calm). STOL planes Hate gusty conditions. In those conditions you should use POWER AND reduce flap and don't cross the Controls.. Nev
BC0979 Posted November 8 Author Posted November 8 Thank you for the replies.. You guys have always been helpful! I realize that Savannah flaps are more than adequate but the Checkride requires this maneuver so I will need to practice it before hand
facthunter Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Well do it with no flap. Quite a few Small Planes have No flap. Nev
Kyle Communications Posted November 10 Posted November 10 I love sideslipping in the sav. Flap or no flap really it doesnt matter. The sav does it really well. I do it all the time 4 1
facthunter Posted November 11 Posted November 11 Not really good advice to put out there, without qualification,. Nev
Kyle Communications Posted November 11 Posted November 11 Well in the Sav it doesnt really matter. I cant comment on other aircraft. The comment is for Savannah's not any other type. I have done it with flaps and without also with a lower flap setting which is available only to my aircraft or anyone who installed my modified flap bracket. Using full flap I cant comment on as I have never done it with full flaps on a savannah because I believe that flap setting is too agressive anyway. Thats why mine has 3 flap settings not just 2
Michel LT Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Hi Kyle, I agree with you regarding the aggressiveness of the full flaps on the savannah and I dont use them very often as I would not like to go around with full flaps. Where can I get more info about your modified bracket. Thanks and best regards from Kenya. MLT
