  1. DRONES ( 1 )

An American tourist was arrested whilst hovering a drone over the boundary wall of Windsor Castle ( Royal residence - London ) and taking video footage.

Police released the man following a caution, but deleted the video content from his drone camera stating Anti-terrorist security legislation. The police were most polite with the tourist, and his drone was returned to him intact and there were no charges made. Neither HM The Queen,. . .nor any of her family were resident in WIndsor Castle at the time.

    DRONES (2 )

An American citizen was caught attempting to fly a drone from a park next door to the white house in Washington DC.

His drone was confiscated, although it had not lifted off the ground when he was challenged by heavily armed secret service agents,. . .he was held, face down on the ground by agents, arrested and charged under U.S. anti-terrorist security legislation which could well result in a prison sentence. . . . Neither the President, nor any of his family were in the White House at the time.

Starboard Outer Engine fire in the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster . . . . read the link,. . .( it's somewhere in there. . .) [ Incident happened early May. . .]

A female member of cabin staff suffered a broken ankle, when attending to a hysterical female passenger on a B737 Passenger flight in light turbulence, when she unbuckled and went to calm the passenger. She was thrown around the cabin somewhat, but was not otherwise seriously injured.

And finally,. . . .a PA28 Warrior flew over my local butty box cafe this morning at a height that I would guess of around 200 feet. . . . .or less. I don't understand why anyone would do this as there is no clear ground within 2 NM in any direction, clear blue sky,. . .not much wind. . . . interesting. . . . . I could clearly see the registration,. . .and I know where it is based. Hmm.

  2. If they make one of them rigs to fit a fat bar$tard,. . . . I'LL Fly one tomorrow morning ! ! ! ! ! ! looking at the wing loading arithmetic,. . .I dunno if I'd fit in the back of a Herc with an 11 metre wing and 2 x RB211s strapped on my back. . . . . ( do you need BIG hands for positive control though I wonder. . . ? ? ? ? ? ) MAYBE you need FLYING GLOVES. . . . . a mate of mine said he bought some Guitar gloves, and could play a guitar just fine whilst wearing em,. . . . .maybe I could fly with the right kind of gloves. . .?? I mean. . .RAF officers used to fly with Kid gloves,. . . .why they didn't use Adult gloves I dunno,. . .. the world is full of questions. . . . .

  3. Looneys... probably what they said about ol' Orville and Wilbur.. good thing they (and others) persevered!

Can't disagree there Adam,. . .probably a wise flight safety decision by Orville and Wilbur in not "persevering" with aerobatics around the high buildings in the middle of New York or Chicago though. . . .006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

  4. And then on the other hand Phil, the guy is obviously aware that he is not getting it as he told you as much. Maybe he is aware that he will never get it but is still happy to come out once a week and have an hour or so in the air even if it is beside an instructor. Maybe the Instructor has had that conversation and they have determined that an hour sitting beside the instructor is better than an hour at the pub.I know many people who should not be let loose with a shopping trolley let alone a car or heaven forbid a flying car. That doesn't mean that development should or will stop.

Yes Geoff,. . .I appreciate your comments, but that wasn't really what I was getting at,. . .but no matter. . . .it's still sad. BTW,. . .the young bloke I mentioned had said Nothing negative to me about his training, other than the fact that he loves every minute of it, and at the moment, he can afford it,. . . . so fair enough,. . .let him have his two lessons per week,. . .I just hope that he will click, and realise his dream. . . . . . He is a long distance truck driver Geoff,. . . . for one of the Belgian multi nationals,. . .he says he only thingks about flying and bacon sarnies all day. . . .!

  5. Yes Nev,. . .sorry about the rant. . .( again ) . .I think the Germans had the right idea with their intensive youth glider training i the early 1930s, they soon differentiated between the students with an innate ability to learn the craft, and thos who couldn't, for their forthcoming Luftwaffe. . . and it certainly worked for them,. . .well,. . .for some of the conflict anyway. . . .

Catch 'em young. . .should be the clarion call, but nowadays the young are too involved with iPhones, facebook, tattoo parlours and weird music in their daft little hot cars with all the suspension lowered so they can't drive over speed humps. . . . . The ATC cadets don't get any flying any more due to Govt. cuts,. . .so there is really no way to get the kids interested in flying. . . .my airfield is full of miserable old fartz . . . .as is the expected result . . . .

***Edited to add. . . .If any of our club members want to give a kid under 16 a flight, they have to be CRB checked first,. . . to make sure they are not Kiddie Fiddleers,. . .this takes up to three months nad there are costs attached. . . . . . nightmare.

  6. They have a strange definition of "only partially damaged".I'm with Nev on this one. Flying car simply gives you the worst of both worlds.

It's the old story again I think Marty,. . . ."ONE DAY. . . . .Everyone will have a flying car. . . . . . ." "We won't need freeways any more. . ." No they bloody well WON'T . . . .it is a ridiculous idea,. . . not EVERYBODY has the wherewithall to fly at all,. . . . I feel sorry for a guy at my airfield who has just completed his twenty seventh hour of flight training in an EV97 Eurostar, and says that he is "Nowhere near". .. going solo in the foreseeable future,. . . I've watched him in the circuit, watched the poor guy trying his best to land it,. . .even in dead calm conditions,. . .he is obviously not comfortable with it. . . . and I have to admit, he could be right,. . . .WELL,. . . .I wonder why the FI hasn't had a quiet word and suggested that he take his Wife on a World cruise, or buy a caravan, . . .a boat, a HArley DAvidson, if he wants some expensive thrills. . .but pack it in for heaven's sake and stop wasting your hard earned . . . . . not everyone is suited to flying. . . . . ( Evidently ) I can see the Instructor's financial angle, at £110.00 per hour. . . but I still think he is a prat. . . . .

I hate to seem callous and nasty about this one,. . .and yes, it is one of my many hobbyhorses,. . . . a very good friend of mine, local woodsmith, makes boat rudders, centreboards, and the best toilet seats i've ever seen, all out of a dozen different kinds of timber all glued together and then machined. . . .real pleasure to go to the bog,. . . .he had been "Taught" at Halfpenny Green Airport, down the road from where I'm domiciled,. . he had NOT been sent solo,. . .and had completed thirty eight hours of training in a C-152, and was told that he would not be given a flight test, as his circuit rejoins needed work. . .! ! ! For chrissake !

I drove him to another airfield ( Shobdon, near the SAS base in Herefordshire ) and the CFI, a mate of mine named Dennis Davies, took him on what was supposed to be an "Evaluation" flihgt. . .to see what he knew. After landing, . . .Dennis gave him a pass slip and said, bugger off and apply for your PPL.

I wonder how often this sort of thing happens in the training industry ( Where are yer Merv . . .? ! ! )

Yes,. . I realise that these two stories are at the opposite ends of the training spectrum,. . .but. . . . .sheesh. Makes you wonder how many promising students give it neck due to innappropriate instruction. . . .?

NOW,. . . multiply that by a few hundred thousand people, to whom the concept of the FLYING CAR is obviously aimed,. . . . . gawd help us. . . . .let's hope the industry comes up with FLY BY WIRE cars, just like the groundling "Driverless" cars before that happens. . . . .!

  7. For my two cents worth,The whole process was flawed.

Sure, he tried to start it many times and it didn't start.

Get out, give it a squirt then get back in the seat and try again.

Leaving it to a NON PILOT is dangerous.

Some have speculated that maybe the throttle was used instead of the break..... who knows.

But it wasn't the best decision made.

At least he got to LEARN from it and share it, rather than being killed.

    Just my thoughts.

Can't help but agree with what you're saying Sir. . . . . . but it appears that, whilst the trike was mothballed for fourteen months, the side throttle had been accidentally advanced to the full power position, and held in place by the friction device. . . possibly whilst manhandling it into the hangar, where it sat for the aforesaid period. When the engine start was attempted, the throttle cable had stuck somewhere along the circuit, holding both the slides on the Rotax 503 twin carb engine set at full throttle position.

Without removing the air cleaner and having a peek inside, this would not be, and WAS actually not noticed. This is almost certainly why the bloke had so much trouble in initially trying to start the engine. Some people never messed about with old motorcycles and lawnmowers whilst they were kids. . . . . I still can't forgive him for putting an innocent person at risk though,. . . .and the chap was very lucky not to have been injured by the propeller as the trike whizzed away to it's final resting place on the other side of the rigging area.

I've had a look at it,. . .it's a real mess. . . . didn't have a chance to take pics but I will later. This was an unexpected technical fault, exacerbated by a rather silly procedural fault,. . . . .dah didah didah. . . which is what seems to cause quite a lot of incidents IMHO.

    THIS TIME. . .nobody was killed or injured. . . . .

  8. I danced with a man, who danced with a girl, who danced with the Prince of Wales. I feel closer to Isaac Asimov than ever before, the hero of my youth. On anti gravity, don't forget that you must input enough energy to gain the potential energy increase with every metre of height, including efficiency losses. And as you descend, the potential energy has to be converted to velocity, or heat, or somehow stored. Otherwise an anti gravity machine is a perpetual motion machine, defying physics.

    Yeah Yeah Yeah,. . . . . . we think we know all that . . . . . ( We think. . .therefore,. . .we are. . . . .) and your point is . . . .? what about antigraviticvelocity batteries, . . .? . . . .sorted.

Yes,. . .the Deane drive ( disproved ) . . . .the ONLY perpetual motion machine in the Western World at the moment, is run by the Inland Revenue. . . . . .

  9. Leaving the esoterica aside

    Hiya Jaba . . .

Esoterica. . . now that would have been a much better moniker for an aircraft project in the UK around 13 years ago, the machine was called OPTICA. Have a google at it. . . we discussed this one last year on this forum actually. It was being evaluated by a few Police forces in the UK to replace helicopters in certain circumstances, as it was much cheaper to buy / run, and it could also fly moderately slowly, ie around 55 Miles per hour, carrying a pilot and observer in a bubble type cockpit a la helicopter, ideal for aerial search ops etc. It died when the factory, including all the tooling and a couple of complete aircraft burned down in suspicious circumstances.

Now if some enterprising individual had though of hanging some road gear on it,. .this could have been interesting. . . but alas, it never was. although it would NOT satisfy Nev's criteria regarding parasitic bits hanging in the airflow during flight mode. . . . If Avocet Mike hasn't seen this yet, I know he'd appreciate the design . . . due to the fact that it is unusual in a lot of respects . . . .(?)

    1326650388_EdgleyEA7Optica.jpg.3ccc156e764bf7643b2976f629cb2920.jpg

Edgeley EA7 Optica . . . esoteric but not as much as some of Burt Rutan's ideas. . . .

  10. Er,. . .Nev,. . .

If you consider an evacuated room ( Vacuum ) on Earth,. . . the "Small Force" would still apply. ie, Earth's gravity would and could not be affected by the lack of atmospheric pressure. . .I must have mis-read the thrust of your point on that. If you dropped a feather, and a lump of steel from some height in the aforementioned evacuated chamber, they would fall, in line with the small force, at exactly the same velocity towards the centre of the Earth,. . . irespective of weight, as there would be no air resistance to impede either item. . . . ( Seen that one on the telly, so it MUST be true. . .! )

In interstellar space,. . . If there is no celestial body nearby to exert a large or small force gravitational influence upon a given item,. . . BUT,. . . a rapid change of direction, according to Newtonian physics,. . .OUGHT to produce a force of some form,. . . .

    This is getting too heavy for my brain ( well, you started it Phil. . .No I didn't . . .it was Marty and Nev,. . .No it wasn't . . . [ . . .is this the five minute argument ?,. . .or the full half hour ? ? ? ] . . . )

  11. Hmm,. . . . prob too much BV product last night, I forgot to mention Maglev trains, or rather, Magnetic Repulsive Technology trains,. . .but I guess they dropped the repulsive bit, . . .just in case someone didn't like the sound of it, . . .but they are, in reality "Captive" RMT trains,. .as they can't work unless they are still hovering over a rail. . . .mono or otherwise. . . And I invented the Gravitational Diversity System many years ago, whilst still corresponding regularly with Isaac Asimov, ( seriously ) I said,, ,.all you need is a simple (! ) system whereby you are able to "Tilt" the gravitational effect forward to accellerate your car, and then reverse this effect in good and proportionate time to decellearate. . . . .I regret that we didn't discuss this with reference to flying appliances. . . . Regrettably, Isaac died before I could get to that . . . . He also used to write to my mate John Whalley, ( now sadly deceased ) who lived in Mansfield, Brissy, and Isaac reckoned that there must be summat in the Brisbane water supply which created blokes like us. . . . .

He told me that I was a lot more silly than HE was. . . . . but we both agreed that it was a terrible day when the Deane ( sort of Perpetual Motion ) Drive was disproved,. . .but,. . .That's another story. . . .mentioned and similarly bemoaned previously herein and upon this forum the day and year first hereinbefore written and forgotten. . . . . .

Another of my regular correspondents was Sir Patrick Moore, of the BBC series "The Sky at Night". . . . . ( Before he was benighted and became the Sky at KNIGHT ) another really friendly bloke of bountiful astronomical wisdom, always willing to connect with his public. . . whom I miss quite a lot. His show has now been strangled and made politically correct with a Black lady co-presenter. . . .and has been dumbed down and reduced to one half hour show per month. . . .I just Lurve the BBC. . . .

Got no more celebrities to write to nowadays. . . . . I exchanged letters with E.E. "Doc" Smith,. . .author of the sci-fi book series, " Gray Lensman" and "Children of the Lens" and other similar titles,. . .but he was REALLY away with the fairies,. . .and none of his sci -fi was based upon anything in particular. . . .

    Phil. . . just having a muse. . . .

  12. Oddly enough,. . .

I went to a sort of pseudo scientific convention in Melbourne where one of the guest speakers was a guy called Stan Deyo ( not sure if I've spelled that correctly. . .) he wrote a book and produced a series of half hour chat cassette tapes entitled "The Cosmic Conspriacy" which mentioned many well known scientists of the day, Tesla was one of them. . .the subject of Electro - anti - gravitics was mentioned. At the bar during a break, I asked him "What about inertia ? " . . .he replied "Yes,. . . I'll get around to that . . ." but regrettably,. . .he didn't. . . . Electro anti- grav devices I've seen. . .these are easily explicable, though limited in scope with present technology,. . .but I believe that it is going to be somewhat difficult to circumvent the physics of inertia, and I would be delighted to look at the arithmetic if such formulaic wonders exist at the moment . . . . .

Physics is a wonderful subject, but in equal measure, it CAN also bugger up some clever theories before they get off the ground . . .( no pun intended )

  13. Do they have sun in England Phil? 074_stirrer.gif.5dad7b21c959cf11ea13e4267b2e9bc0.gif

I think He's getting us mixed up Phil. . . .Y'know how confused these bloody colonials can get. . . . . and NO,. . .we don't need sun visors or Sunnies in England. . . .no need really . . . . . .Not much point "Looking Cool" when you are already freezing your A$$ off @ 52 degrees North. . . . . .

    Phil
