  1. ...I know one guy who extracts the engine bay air from directly behind the Jab engine rather than a torturous exit path in an aim to help cooling for example.

It's easy with a low-wing; exit in the low-pressure area above the wing LE.

  2. ...Avgas is not readily available in most Communities and the chances to get Mogas are generally better...

Good to hear of others up this way, Rolf. I'm working at Nhulunbuy at present and would love to fly my beast up here. But...

It would be cheaper and faster to go Qantas First Class- and I could carry more baggage and would definitely get here.

But we can still dream. Fuel availability is a big issue and getting bigger. Does anyone know how a Jab runs on Opal fuel? It's rated at 91 RON, so I guess it's a no-no.

  3. Stiffy and Ainsworth probably had a fair idea about the scale and quality control of the Rotax operation when they decided to build their own engine. How may of us would have had the balls to do what they did? Give them credit for their energy and enterprise- then lock the old bugger in a shed while younger heads negotiate a future for his company.

  4. ...I already know where these torsional movements and spacing's. are happening within the engine cycle and I think they are responsible for almost all of the problems associated with this engine incl.[ exept valves], fly wheel prop hub fasteners , comp. props ,c/case fretting ...

This has my interest; I fitted a big, heavy spinner to the front of my Jab2.2 partly because I felt the increased flywheel effect would reduced stress on the crank. More knowledgeable people have since told me this might make thing worse. I'm just a bit out of my depth here and would appreciate some expert opinion.

  5. Michael Monck - thank you.The letter from RA-Aus by Michael shows that RA-Aus is trying to act as an appropriate agent within the recreational aviation industry -...

I totally agree. I'm very impressed with his letter. If the Old Guard had still been running the show what would they have done? How fortunate we are to have the current executive.

  6. Choice of fuel? Mogas vs avgasChoice of warm up prior to applying full power ( I know a guy who has had an engine failure who didn't know for three years that jabs should not have full power applied till engine temps were over 50 degrees. He used to take off at any temp over 15 degrees. ( the minimum operating temp)

    Climb out speeds

Cruise settings - many opt for fuel economy but that runs engines hotter

    Probably more

At cruising altitude (7500+) and 2800 rpm the fuel flow on my 2.2 gets down around 11 litres or even less. I'm told that's asking for trouble, but CHTs seem within limits and I dare not pour on more power- I'm already cruising near VNE.

  7. Surely Australia possesses the facilities and people needed to properly develop this engine?

If cost is the issue, there are so many funding programs and grants available for all sorts of unproductive projects, why can't some be allocated to saving and growing a unique Australian business?

Other countries must be laughing at the way we regularly throw money at old industries and ignore the new ones.

We've been here before, with even the great Barry Jones making excuses ("it just doesn't fit the guidelines") for not supporting promising new industries.

  8. . . . why did a company based in a country with wide open spaces design an aircraft with a cockpit only sufficient for bloody midgets ? ? . . . )Phil

    Not quite, Phil.

Years ago I booked a week of lessons in a Gazelle. Having driven the whole family hours from home, I was finally going to learn to fly a powered plane.!

I didn't fit. Crestfallen, we drove all the way home in disgust.

I later found I could easily fit my 1930mm frame into an early model Jab. The later ones are even larger.

  9. Has anyone researched the likely cost of repairs for possible Jab engine failures?

Those of us with low-time, but so far reliable engines might want to weigh up the certain cost of upgrades vs the possible costs of repairing failures. Detonation-induced thru-bolt? Exhaust valves. Flywheel studs?

How much cheaper is the upgrade than repairing a failure (assuming a safe out landing)?

...or maybe we should await the results of the current negotiations.
