Does that include the distillery? Can I book a patch of verandah?Ausfly Narromine ...Yep Derek, I'll be there setting up Camp David... -
On retirement, both my wife and I took up new sports. We each gained a new focus to our lives and met new people. Trouble is, her new friends keep dying; another one today.
Just goes to prove that flying is heaps safer than lawn bowles.

Bruce it was a case of either close them and use extinguisher, or open them and dive. Which should come first, given that the extinguisher has a limited supply of retardant?Old Koreelah, did you notice your discrepancy about the cowl flaps? If you are going to blow out the fire then they should be open as David says... -
Major thread drift, but relevant. I'm currently writing a POH for my home-built Jodel and I need help with the section on "In case of fire..."The RAA article unfortunately confused the two type of Li batts. They called a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery a Lithium ION Phosphate. Pity, that is one article that should have been technically correct. So far I have: Shut off fuel, close cowl flaps (to cut off airflow) and flood engine bay with fire extinguisher.
Perhaps David, with your unique qualifications you could venture some suggestions. I've read of pilots who have dived to pick up airspeed to "blow out" an engine bay fire. Aside from VNE considerations, is this tactic worth considering?

Crickey Rank, don't give it away. Your place is on the agenda for a visit by our club...I didn't renew my membership last year in protest, my print magazine was the reason I kept up my membership since I wasn't in a position to use my flying privileges, and I was feeling that the new direction was starting to look like the old directions all over again. In just a year of not reading my magazine cover to cover it is shocking how out of touch I feel I have become. I now have to decide wether to step back into the fold, or mount my plane on a pole in the garden. -
I was unable to go, but that awesome video shows me what I missed!
Impressive setup, a credit to your community.
Love drones or hate them, they have revolutionised aerial photography.

Way out in unfenced country one squatter was visiting his neighbour and boasting about how many "cleanskins" he'd branded. "Yep" he exclaimed, "I never eat my own beef!"
To which his host replied: "well you're eating it now!"

...and my Jodel, with flap hinged offset like a Jab....Aircraft that pitch down with full flap application include those with leading edge lift devices (think Boeing 737) and aircraft that use split flaps or a combination of split flaps with fowler action...

Sadly true, Oscar. An Australian policeman spent years investigating the Kennedy Assasination and found a good case for "stuff up": a poorly-trained, sleep-deprived Secret Service agent sitting in the car behind the president was carrying a new self loading rifle down next to his leg. When the shooting started he pulled it out, accidentally discharging the "magic bullet"....if faced with a choice of believing in conspiracy or a stuff-up as the cause of a situation, a stuff-up will be found to be the real cause in almost all cases'...The ensuing coverup led to the "Grassy Knoll" conspiracy theory. Much more interesting...
But then again, maybe our board contains a couple of the most intelligent manipulators on the planet......The suggestion that the Board, as a whole, could be led by the nose by a few of its members into willfully harming the organisation, beggars belief...-

The plans for my wooden Jodel include a comprehensive braided static harness linking all major metal components: undercarriage, engine, spa bolts, controls, tanks and tailwheel. I'm sure composite aircraft need the same.

My interpretation of those regs is that you can land in a field suitable for the purpose, but if it all goes tits up CASA might impose a hefty fine.

You can print off the proxy form, fill it in, scan it and email it to RAA. You can nominate the chairman as your proxy and indicate how you want them to vote. Takes 5 minutes.Hehehe, I'm a new pilot and don't know anyone I can proxy through.... ah well, I guess I won't be voting, I might go flying instead....

Reminds me of another aircraft engine shoehorned into a car. Although not a fan of excess, I loved the stories about Maseratis and Porsches being overtaken at high speed by a mystery Rolls Royce...

300 or more pilots and business owners from every state were there. We heard a very articulate intro from the convenor, predictable and empty rhetoric from politicians, then CASA's chairman bravely took the microphone...
The nonsensical implementation of ADSB years before any other country was the first topic. The flack started from Dick Smith and plenty of others joined in.
I had to catch the train, but it was just warming up as I left.
Love to know what else happened.

Perhaps 57 near touchdown Nong, but the old one I flew was wallowing too much for me; I needed a safety margin, hence the 70kt approach.

A lexan (polycarbonate) screen will give you lots more protection than the Perspex used by Jabiru and many others, but even big boys are now vulnerable to these aerial toys:

Crickey Skeptic. I should have read the date.

I recently flew one after a ten year break. I'd forgotten the fast approach speed (70+kts) and the tiny rudder, which had me over correcting on approach. Nice aircraft, but get altitude before you get the feel of the controls.

One year we had an informal gathering of forumites.
When Ian had his shop set up it was a starting point.
