  1. Unbelievable, what Are the chances? So here I am flying lone dawn patrols in my nieuport, meanwhile an old aviation Pal ( whome was between planes) whom I have not spoken nor seen in 12 months rings up out of the blue! However last week I flew over his strip(8 nm away) in the war plane , gave him a wing waggle as I passed over. S o anyway he asks how I've been and then mentions if I saw the old war fighter fly over last week? I say" did it give you a wing waggle?

Surprised he say " yes did it wave to you?lol. I filled him in on my new beast ect , then he gies on to say he was calling for some advice. He has found his dream plane a tiger moth replica, and was just after general info. But here's the thing! The tiger moth was parked next to my nieuport in qld , turns out the seller of my nieuport is the seller of the tiger( which I have inspected and sat in when up there)

So the tiger will soon be reunited with the nieuport for dawn patrols... What are the chances that some one just up the road , whom had no idea about my nieuport would not only also by a war bird, but from same seller and then ring me?amazing destiny I say ....

  2. Been a couple years and couple hundred more flying hours plus 2 new aircraft,

So I thought I'd update this particular thread.

So the fog over still occurs here.

Conditions for it to occur are cold morning ( when breathing produces a mist, NO visible fog)with sun out , at around 50-100 ft agl the outside air temp is considerably warmer than the ground layer under 50-100 ft agl, So when the cold windscreen hits the considerably warmer air it fogs over(on the outside) It only ever lasts 1-2 minutes. Generally during early winter and early spring.

In the lightwing only the front wind screen fogs over leaving the side windows clear.

I have a pre flight PAX brief I added to make my PAX aware of this.

I discovered in the nieuport my goggles do it ( quick wipe with my gloves did the trick ).

I am yet to find any notes in any aviation info on this particular occurrence .

Would be very interested to know if it happens elsewhere?,as I'm yet to have it happen any where else but here and pa's ( 7 nm est of me but situated same distant at bottom of Marmon range(600 ft agl we at bottom)

Not sure if I posted what I found in regards to combating the occurrence? So I'll update anyway.

After much experimenting in the bathroom with hot shower and fogged mirror using every thing ( rainx , vinegar, mirror anti-fog, bees wax, dish washing solution to name a few) I found a winner!

Dish washing solution hands down was most affective. Simply apply to clean dry cloth and smear a film - note- just a light film! I once went overboard and found I had a cabury's aero bar ( soap bubbles) for a windscreen .

Stay safe and NEVER stop learning aviators, although the " never stop learning" is a given in aviation.

  3. Found this.... I can get 20 ltr drum of paraffin oil from the fodder store$$?

Might be worth a go , prepared to pay a lil extra than trany fluid for an environmentally friendly burn.

  4. Will edit vid ASAP but here's a pic

    Making doughnuts in the sky

I have a safety switch for smoke (you have to hold it on for smoke) also wired via relay direct to engine ( rectifier reg)as per specs For safety ,so it won't work if engine stops.

    Happy days

  5. It's still being proof read :( But I understand it could take a while with them spelling and grammer errors .. Lol

Pa just finished reading it ,and gave it a massive thumbs up. He also would love to see it in a movie and the real intro makes it much more film worthy.

He said - it was non stop action, with plenty laughs , and even some tears! Yep Pa admitted to sheading a few tears. He said it reminded him of both Biggles and Walter mitty( Walter who? Oh quick google and I see). Hanging to publish...

  6. I'm still yet to fabricate an injector as per advice which improves vaporisation by almost 50%( so I'm told?) ,but I'm pretty happy with the system set up as is.

Figures crossed for dawn patrol in the morning With gopro attached

  7. So is aircraft type referred to as

    LP tw

    Hp tw

    LP nw

    Hp nw

    Ect....?

Obviously it can not mean literal, as no one could take off in their new single seat

Eg .. One of a kind home built single seat .

  8. Tim, can you give us a description of your system....are you just pumping it into the exhaust outlet pipe, like they do on ag planes ?..

It's called the " holy smokes system" from Bear Perkins. USA" designed for ultralight use - specifically rotax 2 strokes.

    Perkins powered parachutes

  9. The oil used for farm spraying is the most innocuous. Trans oils contain stuff you shouldn't foul the air with. Nev

Hope you let ford know? My old ed still smokes better than the plane on a good day.. 008_roflmao.gif.692a1fa1bc264885482c2a384583e343.gif

Seriously , the recommended fluids in no particular order are.

From aerobatic pilots (4 st eng) =

Manufactured smoke oil( mineral oil + parifon oil)

Same as above but home made

    Diesel + kerosene mix

    Transmission fluid

    Transmission + diesel mix

    Diesel

    Pesticide( summer oil)

From ultralight and micro light pilots (2st eng)

    Manufactured smoke oil

    As above but home made

    Concrete form oil

    Pesticide( summer oil)

    Transmission fluid

Feel free to add what I missed

    What I have tested

Pesticide ( summer oil) thumbs down expensive- burn very quick -$25 3 Ltrs burn 1 min

Super dry aviation smoke oil. Better , but very expensive , burned slower-$55 -3 Ltrs burm 3 min

Trany flyid. Cheapest ( free)same smoke thickness as " super dry" burns slowest - $0 (have plenty in stock for the ford trans and commy power steer lol). 3 Ltrs burn over 5 mins

Smoke is alway released above 1000 ft after a wing waggle followed by a medium 360 deg turn to form( attempt) a circle. Then wing waggle and fly out. And never descend during or after .. As per aerobatic champion advice.

And also found that most say to use the smoke system on final to be seen? I find this odd? Imagine seeing a plane on final , engine revs drop and smoke pours from engine!037_yikes.gif.f44636559f7f2c4c52637b7ff2322907.gif

Also in direct communication with. Dick Starks( K.C Dawn patrol) Nieuport 11 builders and flying display. Dick recommends concrete form oil but proving difficult to find.

  10. Tim, can you give us a description of your system....are you just pumping it into the exhaust outlet pipe, like they do on ag planes ?..

    Taped into exhaust manifold...

  11. Found a winner! Thanks to forum member Nieuportpete for the advice

    For 2 strokes ,transmission fluid!

Works really well . Thick white smoke ,no residue,

only smells a little bit rank.
