It would seem that , other than Spenaroo & his cooling problems, no one has any experience, speculation about adapting outboard motors to aircraft. Another idea stillborn.

I guess, I am hoping GB will make some comments as it is his IFA that is giving trouble.

Actually no; Breach of Biosecurity which could be very costly since the property owner can be disqualified from selling his stock, so you want to be careful being flippant around stock owners, they have to work hard for their Compliance.

No, you are just another politician in respect to the covid debate. When it is over I would still like to meet you so no hard feelings. I am taking care to minimize contact with others but life goes on. Food crops need the be looked after. We can't all be hermits.
I seek not election, position of authority or consensus - merely presenting a point of view for health vigorous debate, in the trying times. So no offence taken or intended and would be happy to meet with any of my Forum friends.

I will continue to fly within the rules. It doesn't place anyone in any danger. The local flying school has resumed limited operations, they are all vaccinated and I'm guessing the customers have to be vaccinated as well.
Are you addressing any of the points I have tried to raise?

You know, IF everyone on this forum got to personally meet each other at a forum meeting, I am damn sure that the hostility would not be the same at that meeting?
Primarily, we are human beings with a big interest in Aviation.
Someone here takes a short fly in his plane, do a few orbits and land…..and he gets piled on with a barrage of surface to air missiles.
So IF we all stop playing Covid Policeman…….that would be a good thing 🙂
What hostility? - its called debating.
Hopefully we are all being polite, taking a position and strongly arguing our point. How boring would be the World without difference.

I don’t know but I’m also going to ask the question of Fitti as to what happens if the motor dies at full course.
My last woodcomp would go full fine if it failed in flight.
On another speculative idea; could your motor somehow be being repeatedly and very briefly being energised, (pulse not registered by pilot) in the cruise pitch setting? If this was happening the motor to act against a spring under tension and possibly overheating.

Would speculate, that neither full fine (as in take off/climb setting) or full course (as in cruise) would not really present as much of a drama - you could still proceed to the nearest suitable landing ground/airfield and land (not crash).

LOL. You are a laugh a minute.
along with with what Garfly has said I have another question.
Can you give one example of a country that has controlled the virus - at all, let alone with lockdowns. It’s surely a comedy routine to think any measure is going to get rid of it. It is going to be with us forever, and so we better get used to living with it.
And for what it’s worth, not that I need to explain myself to you, I go from my house to my hangar and come into less contact with people than when I go do my food shopping.
Alarmists like yourself do nothing to aid the cause. Let’s get a real grip on what we are in middle of, and do the best we can to remain human, because right now it appears humanity is out the window, and I see nothing but division and hatred amongst us all. God help us.
Thanks BD - Many of the higher econamy, island states, have managed at least once, to achieve Zero Community Transmission.
I have never suggested that Australia can remain CV free indefinitely, or even that this is practical objective. All I have suggested is that Zero Community Transmission is achievable & desirable, in the short term, while we develop a suitable plan (herd immunity being a significant part) and systems for on going management/minimisation of CV impact on society and the econamy.
As for your flying activities & your shopping (why not get delivered/click & collect?) - sure you as an individual have probably acted responsibly, as far as inter person contact is concerned. BUT successful quarantine, does not allow for individual determination/interpretation/action, its an all in/out situation (no grey area). You have subverted the concept, even if you have acted within the wholly inexplicable NSW Gov rules.
Alarmist?? - I have some previous exposure to quarantine environments, nasty disseises - I can tell you, what Gladys has been doing, is nothing like what I understand a successful quarantine would require - not even close. This is not alarmist it is frustration with the political subversion of a well understood , tried & true concept, that has been around for hundreds of years.
My position is simple ; You (we) either do quarantine as it should be done or forget it. Where there is the threat of highly infectious disease, there is no such thing as success partial quarantine.

Okay, please explain which NSW quarantine regulation Bird Dog has broken.
Also, please explain how, ipso facto, that activity is more likely to spread the virus than, say, driving to the hardware superstore to buy stuff.
Also, why do you endorse Flighty's subversion of the quarantine system (below) but attack others actually staying within guidelines?
A post of mine on the other Covid thread:
Skippy, I'm confused, you endorse Flighty's idea of subverting the log-in system with unreadable handwriting. Yet nobody here has been more full-on about respect for government lockdown conditions, than you. (You fairly blew a gasket at the "contempt" of fellow aviators flying too high, with no guy in the sky as an idea of something to do. ;- )
My consistent point has been - the (NSW) Lockdown/Quarantine has been a debacle from the start. I am not suggesting you/BD.anyone else is/ are breaking any NSW Gov rules by breaking one of, if not the main, cardinal rule of quarantine, no movement, you have assisted in the failure of the system.
Thank you for making my point; In a properly implemented quarantined, you would not be slipping down to the hardware store, grog shop, barber or any of the other non essential trips - you would remain at home for the few days - 3 weeks the outbreaks was active for.
For most people subjected to a proper (fast/comprehensive) quarantine response, there is every change of being over within a few days - the adjective is nil community transfer. As soon as you identify & contain (quarantine) the infected people, so that they can not transmit to others, the community quarantine can be lifted. Simples!
I do not respect the NSW Gov Lockdown at all, for it is an almost complete fake , not even coming close to a true quarantine response . However I do my best to isolate with my family, avoid travel and interaction with others as much as is practical and am about to get my second jab. As an individual there is little more that I can do.
Who ever suggested subversion of the "log-in" system - I log in wherever I go (I rarely go anywhere during lockdown) - I just happen to use the pen/paper usually provided.

The pitch adjustment motor on this type of electric variable pitch propeller runs between the fine and coarse limits. Both the fine and coarse limits have a switch to stop the motor at the limits. It doesn't give a shit what the pilot is requesting if it is within the limits.
13 hours ago, BirdDog said:Yeah as above. It’s a pretty rudimentary system. Just a 3 way rocker. In the middle there is nothing. Push it forward and it runs the motor to full fine until the stopper stops the motor. Pull it backwards and it goes full course the same way.
Regards having it set too course for take off - after my run up and I’m all, I have added a step to my checklist to run up to make sure it hits more than 5200 on the ground. Takes 5 seconds to do and confirms the prop is in full fine.
Thanks guys - Although I have a CS endorsement, it was achieved in GA/hydraulic systems. I think I understand the principals but have little practical experience with electric CS/IFA.
On an erlier point - replacing a $700 motor. I do know that there is a huge selection of stepper/linear drive motors in the market place - would one of these not be a cost effective substitute for the obvi0sly problematic one supplied by Fitti.
And
Could this be a motor overload, coursed by a misalignment/binding in the mechanism, rather than a motor problem?

I doubt if we can agree on this Turbs -
I see either gross mismanagement of or deliberate intent, to undermine, a simple concept "quarantine". Either a total cock up or something more sinister.
You apparently see something else - perhaps the heroic struggles of our leaders in a no win situation. A bit totalitarian?
I focus on the health response, knowing that correctly implemented, it will be the quickest and lowest cost way out (or at least to a controlled situation) of this pandemic.
You "muddy the waters" with your emphasis on business success/failure - which does nothing to address the principal issue, CV19.
You make completely unnecessary & incorrect accusations about my political leanings/philosophy, inferring that somehow this is colouring my perception.
I present a critical/logical progression of thought, using the evidence provided on a daily basis, by the politician's, epidemiologists and my own life experience. Doesn't mean I am correct but sure beats the hell out of blind faith.
You speak of "novel approaches" (what are they?) Without further information it is hard to comment, however after hundreds of years of quarantine history, I doubt it would be in the area of concept, most likely in the equally important are of human management/communication which must evolve as technology and culture demand.

Mental health is vital. Look after yourselves lads. We are still a VERY long way from being anywhere near normality. If ever. Too many agendas at play.
Well done - You and all the other quarantine breakers, are the reason why the virus has/is spreading.
Of course your metal health is important - if the quarantine/Lockdown had been swiftly/fully implemented. the few days-3weeks to get it under control, would not have had a significant impact on your metal wellbeing.
You may thank Pandemic Gladys for the negative impact on your metal health.

Turbs me old mate - It would seem that you generally accept the propaganda that is being served up to you by politician's & media. My evidence for this is your persistence in the idea that the management of our pandemic is without political interference/modification. I on the other hand take a far more cynical view.
Take quarantine/lockdown as a topical case ;
Quarantine is simple in concept – absolutely no movement of the infected person/population & potentially infected (Lockdown!). The faster, comprehensive & strictly enforced the Lockdown; the quicker spread is contained and the shorter will be the Lockdown period. The few days – 3 weeks, would be far better tolerated by the people and business, than what we have now. Gross mismanagement? or Deliberate policy?
In this modern era, perhaps not quit so simple to implement – our complicated lives/dependencies require “essential” workers/services continue – this then leads to the potential for disease leakage. Unavoidable but predictable and importantly manageable, with the right attitude/policies strictly implemented. Gross mismanagement? or Deliberate policy?
Our leaders have had nearly 2 years of, our own and World, experience in the management of the pandemic, to refine/improve their management. We are basically back at Flatten the Curve (a hysteria driven response), which may be applicable to, multi nation, continental land mases where border porosity (to virus transmission) is a reality. This is demonstrably at odds with island nations (us) where Zero Community Transmission is a viable alternative allowing a considered managed (epidemiological) transition of the population to immunity through vaccination. The latter, being far less costly both in social and economic terms but may be politically difficult (transient hard/unpopular decision may need to be implemented)

My view;
· CV19 has moved from being a largely heath response/matter, modified by political expediency, to an almost wholly political matter.
· Big business wants Australia open NOW! Never mind the cost in lives lost/spent in ill health.
· Scomo is on side with this, as is his puppy “Pandemic Gladys”.
· Pandemic Gladys is facilitating this by ensuing Delta gets out.
· The current focus on the vaccine miracle, delivered by Saint Scomo, will take us up to/past the next Federal election –putting Scomo in a good position to be re-elected.
· The voting public will realise too late, the currently available vaccines, will not be the miracle, that will return us/society or are economy to its former good health. The election will have passed and a new rhetoric/spiel will take over.
· The opposition parties are largely mute – they know what’s going on but fear that the voters, desperate for relief, will react against any dissenting commentary/opinion. Should events move in their favour (CV10 disaster) they will still be there to pick up the pieces (win).
· Pressure (infection or threat thereof, curtesy Gladys) is being applied to State leaders, to fall in line behind the Federal plan, to open up, no matter their CV status.
· Unfortunately, on reaching the mystical 80% (of what?) vaccination, should we open up our State & International borders, there will be very little chance of reversing the damage. By then we may all have had the vaccine, contracted Covid/recovered/long CV or died, so perhaps this is a moot point.
· Quarantine/Lockdowns will continue, in response to CV19 flair up/hot spots/clusters, hopefully not as devastating in their scope and failure, as this one.
· In short, our leaders are, once again, tricking us into accepting the “absolute necessity”, of going into an unnecessarily dangerous & costly situation – sound familiar?

Just had a thought (dangerous):
Bristell stated he had the cruise (course) setting to 5500rpm WOT.
He made no mention of the take off/climb (fine) setting which should be 5200 rpm Static - could this have some any sort of impact on the pitch motor?

The PHU system still appears to be manual from a quick check. This isn't an issue unless there's a big breakout. Vic managed last year's with Defence troops, but Delta is a whole new disease.
Yes I'm aware of Queensland's excellent work in holding down the numbers. Just 5 weeks ago we were churning out zero after zero. This afternoon we were running the numbers of potential growth at current rate vs availability of all ventilators.
The debacle in the southern states is two things:
1. The Delta strain which transmits way faster than previous strains. Don't forget the magic of Gladys/Scomo
2. This year the infections are embedded in the community so we have community transmission. Thanks to Glady's & Scomo
With the numbers exploding, it's the electronic data system that's allowed contact tracing to keep up with Delta and the Al Taqua and other breakouts or a few weeks ago are over, but the bushfire is still going.

Yes, coolant has many protective qualities with preventing corrosion and anti-freeze
but it also helps with heat, if its not boiling - its not building up pressure for the radiator cap to take effect.
distilled water is fine for casual track bikes as they don't sit idle and always have airflow through the radiator to keep the temps under control. you wouldn't want to ride one in traffic though.
the proper race bikes will run a non-glycol based coolant, so they get the benefits of the higher boiling point without the drawbacks of slippery messes on the track when it all goes wrong.the endurance riders who do lots of high revs at low speeds will use water-less coolant that doesn't boil to 190*C
Still think you are barking up the wrong tree - most liquid cooled engines use a water + glycol + witches brew, to prevent electrolysis, cavitation, freezing, provide lubricant to seals and slightly raise the boiling point.
The main increase in boiling point is pressure ie the liquid is in a sealed system, heat will cause expansion/pressure, the H2O will not boil until , at a guess, 120 - 130C. You want your coolant to spend most of its time at about 90+ C ,only rising above this for short periods when the engine is labouring eg going up an extended slop/climbing to altitude.
My understanding is that straight water is as good(may be better) at heat removal/ carriage BUT does not have all the other benefits conferred by the coolant additive.
Waterless coolants, I have never studied at all, however I note that Rotax state that Evians Coolant is less efficient than water/glycol - your engine may run a bit hotter.

Landing without permission
in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Posted
Turbs; You are "drawing a very long bow". I have worked in both intensive and extensive agriculture all my life - pissing in/on a paddock/grass strip, is unlikely to be a breach of biosecurity.
Most biosecurity relates to intensive agriculture - you are unlikely to try & land in a piggery, chook shed or animal feed lot. There are some cropping activities that are a bit sensitive but again the chances of you choosing to land on an irrigated paddock (bogging/obstructions) are pretty slim.
