  1. Yes got an email on 27/8 regarding trial of class E at 5500 feet at Uluru which they still insist on calling Ayers Rock being extended to 1 December due to Covid. Nothing on lowering of Class E on the East Coast since April. They seem to be  shell shocked at the number of negative submissions to their poorly planned proposal especially when they cannot find a single shred of evidence to support their claims. Maybe they were taking a leaf out of Donald Trumps book & like his efforts everything is collapsing around them.

    Thanks for the post, Kevin.

Being a Geography tragic I always look up the spot on Google Earth. Looks like a nice place.

I haven't been there for at least 25 years. It was about 40 minutes in the Archer from Hamilton Aerodrome & the wife & I would go over for a swim and lunch at the Pauanui club at the Western end of the strip by the golf course, I just looked on Google Earth & could not believe how big the place is now. Another favourite lunch & swim spot was a bit further North at Whitianga. There was another strip only about 15km north of there with a beautiful beach but I can't remember its name now. Our club used to own a lodge built by club members on Great Barrier Island near the Airport at Claris. I just had a look and the runway is now sealed. We spent plenty of weekends at the lodge. Awesome fishing & real down to earth people. We'd get a rickety bus over to Tryphena & go to one of the fantastic restaurants where after the meal the owners would come over and sit at the table with you and share stories and plenty of alcohol. I bet that's all gone now too.

  3. About 30 years ago in NZ I was landing at Pauanui airpark and the wind was offshore so as the strip is perpendicular to the beach the final approach is from the sea when a Westerly is blowing which it was. There was a bit of traffic around so I made 10 then 3 mile, joining and downwind calls for 23 and less than a minute later another aircraft made a down wind call without any previous calls for the same runway but in fact he was upwind for 05 and I could see him at 1000 feet directly opposite me. I called him and told him his mistake & also that he was going upwind & there was a conflict. Not only that, the wind was a good 15knots. I got a "Ehr Umm Shi" before he released the PTT and then a couple of minutes later a joining crosswind for 23 call. On the ground he made a sort of mumbling apology. I said didn't you see the windsock & hear my call to which he nodded & he said he genuinely thought it was from 05. No explanation though as to why he was on a conflicting trajectory. Eyes and ears matter.

  4. A few years ago coming back to my home aerodrome I made a 10 mile inbound, then an overhead joining call & heard nothing else. If there is no-one else around that's my last call. I like fairly tight circuits & turn base at about 1000 fpm down. Then I spotted a C172 on final in front of me. I made a call & went full power but forgot to push carb heat off & for a second or 2 was a bit confused at the lack of power. That sorted I watched the landing and turnaround & then he stopped half way along the runway. I made a call on every leg and eventually asked what the !*!* he was doing as I had to go around again.

Later at the clubhouse after an initial terse chat I found out he heard nothing and made inbound and downwind calls & his other radio was on area frequency. After testing the radio on CTAF we found it wasn't working at all. He knew radio 2 was working at least receiving as he'd heard other broadcasts. A simple solution would have been to have both radios on CTAF once in the 10 mile radius area. Also testing both radios would have been a good idea. That said I have had radio failures so there is no silver bullet. Keeping a good lookout especially in the circuit is essential and only supplemented with radios and ADSB.

  5. I looked at some of my high school handwriting a while ago and I was impressed  at how neat and legible it was. Now when I write anything I can barely read it myself so anyone else has buckleys. During my travels around the world from 73 to 76 I wrote letters home almost every week or sometimes more often. My mother kept them all & when she died I sat and read though a lot of them. My handwriting then was still pretty good & I kept the font really small to fit as much as possible on a single aerogramme.

Being in the IT industry since 1980 meant handwriting became quite rare. Prior to that I had to fill in data entry forms like everyone else in the late 60s & 70s so capital letters were required. Now I can't print at all in lower case but my upper case printing is still pretty good.

Tried one of these in my J200 recently(after reading your post) as the odyssey battery couldn't cope with the winter cold starts... So far so good, with temps below 0 deg The Mottobatt starts it first go no problems..  Cost me $175 delivered. The two way terminals is a good feature too.

I hope it lasts as well as mine has. Never thought about the 2 way terminals but depending on location that is a handy feature.

  7. And that is after an instant lockdown. 13,320 individual contacts have been identified as well as 300 places of interest. There are 120 people isolating in the South Island. There are 600 contact tracers working full time and they expect to double that number over the next few days. The rise in cases is the highest it has ever been for any outbreak since the beginning of this pandemic.

Only time will tell if they are able to get on top of it. Meanwhile vaccinations have ramped up considerably after a pretty slow start even though NZ was at 102% of its original target with front line health workers having all been vaccinated. So far just over a million people 1/5th of the population have been fully vaccinated while 1.8 million have had the first shot.

The Rumble site is noted for promoting vaccine conspiracies and other misinformation that other channels refuse to promote.

If you want to make a motza out of a new streaming channel, start promoting misinformation and anti-govt conspiracy stories where the story tellers can't back up their stories with real evidence - sort of like Trumps claims about the "big steal", whereby he still cannot produce a shred of admissable court evidence, despite lodging multiple lawsuits against his election loss.

    https://www.wired.com/story/rumble-sends-viewers-tumbling-toward-misinformation/

You won't find the story (that Flightrite refers to) easily, doing a Google search - for two reasons, nay three -

    1. Google hates Rumble because Rumble is intent on replacing Youtube, and Google searches decline to find Rumble due to Google algorithms that are likely designed to remove Rumble from Google searches. Rumble is currently suing Google over this feature. The lawsuit is ongoing.

    2. The story is misinformation about 2 children that have reportedly died in Australia as a direct result of COVID-19 vaccination. The story is false, plain and simple.

    3. Flightrite referred to the interviewer as "Steve Peters", the interviewers correct name is "Stew Peters".

  9. For some years before the Covid pandemic the annual Flu shot was offered to all and sundry with it being free to pensioners and emergency service workers and possibly others I don't know. Generally the vaccines were developed for the annual variant that occurred in the Northern hemisphere Winter so we got the benefit of that development. The problems that arose were generally that the Flu virus had mutated into a slightly different variant by the time it got to Australia. This had varying efficacy results depending on the mutation. Generally efficacy hovered around the 50% mark but in 2018 it was around 20%.

Very few people bothered to look at the issues including efficacy, side effects etc because the medical advice was if you were very young or very old you should get the shot. People got sick and died after getting the flu shot but that never made it into the news. It has been widely reported that there are 2500 to 3500 influenza deaths per annum in Australia but that is simply not true. The 5 year average from 2014 to 2019 is 403. 2017 was the highest year with 1181 and 2018 the lowest with 149.

    https://www.immunisationcoalition.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/1-Barr-ASM-2020-presentation.pdf

Now there is media and government driven hysteria about Covid-19 vaccines and everyone has an opinion. The vaccines were developed very quickly and the normal 3-5 year testing period was not an option. New studies are appearing weekly showing different and often confusing and contradictory information. Astra Zeneca got a particularly bad rap because of media hysteria over rare blood clots and bumbling government advice. Pfizer comes to the rescue only there is hardly any supply.

Now new case studies in Europe have found the blood clot risk with Astra Zeneca and Pfizer are virtually the same. Side effects of both vary because every persons immune system reacts differently.

Astra Zeneca advised they would not profit from the vaccine during the Pandemic. Pfizer made no such commitment and their last quarterly profit was $US 19.2 billion, a 92% increase on the previous quarter. The Pfizer PR machine is very keen to downplay any issues surrounding its product while ensuring their rivals get the loudest possible publicity with theirs. Pfizer also hold undue influence over the US government and CDC and ensured that Astra Zeneca did not get approved for use in the USA.

  10. When a website article calls Covid-19 the "Chinese virus", "Wuhan Coronavirus" "Fauci Flu" and "Chinese Germs" and goes on to state that Trump  introduced the Vaccines that are both unsafe and ineffective you know it is right wing anti vaxination bullshit straight away.

  11. This is the sort of stupidity that is completely unfathomable. All 69 are getting a $5000.00 fine so that $345,000 plus a bit more for other breaches for being stupid and laughing about it. One person was positive and now 6 more have tested positive and there are a whole lot of exposure sites.

NZ got 1 community case in Auckland and immediately locked the entire country down yesterday. There are now 7 cases and they have been linked to the NSW outbreak. The strain is so transmissible it got out through people in Hotel quarantine passing it to another group in a room on the opposite side of the hallway (who originally tested negative) when doors were opened for 3 to 5 seconds up to 4 times when food was being delivered.

  12. Those scenes of Manchester are just a 1950s version of most large American cities today. I haven't been to the US since the late 90s but I was astounded at the level of poverty back then In places like LA, New York New Orleans and Atlanta. Chicago, Detroit and large ex industrial cities in the mid west rust belt are worse. They don't call those areas ghettos for nothing.

  13. I got considerably better performance from my Jabiru Gen 3 3000 engine by getting rid of the original wooden propellor which had disappointing performance from day 1. This is not a Jabiru prop but one supplied by my aircraft designer. Cruise was about 100 knots at 2850 rpm and climb although pretty good at 1000 fpm at 80 knots was not exceptional. I destroyed he first wooden prop in a test flight landing fxxxxup and the second was no better. Fast forward 2 years and I got a top of the range carbon fibre Bos-5 ground adjustable 2 blade prop from Bolly. Initially I set it fine & it climbed like a sick angel. At 75 knots I climbed at 16-1800 fpm but straight & level I could exceed max rpm (3300) and get around 120 knots.

A bit of fiddling changing it coarser each time I got it to where I like it and have not touched the pitch since then (October 2018). Now I climb out at 1200 fpm at 80 knots and cruise at 120 knots 2850rpm indicated at 4000 feet which is about 130 knots TAS. A side advantage of the Bos-5 is better cooling due to the torus curve on the last inboard 25mm of trailing edge of the prop forcing more air into the intake nacelles. This was the best $1700.00 I have spent on my aircraft since it was built.

Jabiru have their own composite prop made by Bolly and do not recommend any other props so for a 24 registered Jabiru you are limited. While the Jab composite prop is set to a pitch, it is adjustable like all bolly props.

  14. It's the Marsh family from Kent in the UK who have adapted a number of songs into lockdown ditty's. There's "Have the New Jab" (Hallelujah),  "Lockdown World" (Uptown Girl) and " Goodbye Pandemic Road"  (Goodbye yellow brick road) & their first that went viral from Les Miserables. A very talented family.

Arron....you are on to something.  Look at the USA where they have not approved the ‘EU’ vaccine (AZ) but have approved the US vaccines.  You would be surprised how commercial interests are able to promote and ‘market’ a research paper without being seen to be doing so when that research benefits that company.  Too often scientists are ignorant of this.  There is a great book titled ‘Manufacturing Consent’ that deals with this.

When Pfizers profit increases 92% in a single quarter you can bet they are playing all the political cards they can find to maintain that momentum. You can't let a European upstart in especially when their vaccine can be stored in the fridge so doesn't need minus 70 deg C and is one tenth of the cost. Nooo we will make sure the press gets every bit of news that is bad about this and make sure it never gets approved here.

Meanwhile the UK & Europe are open about the facts and temporarily suspend AZ use for a while. But it is the mainstay of the UK vaccination programme & they have one of the highest vaccination rates in the world. You can also bet Pfizer are downplaying the reports on 29 July of Pfizer having a similar blood clot risk & paying as much as necessary to stop it being published in the Lancet.

It is a pretty cynical view I know but one thing that is pretty hard to dispute is that Big Business runs US politics.

  16. The baggage handlers loading that aircraft in the foreground just looked at it crash & then calmly went on with their work. The person who ran out didn't have a fire extinguisher but there probably wasn't one where he was but at least he tried to assist.

About 6 or 7 years ago one bloke at our aerodrome was bedding in the new brake pads on his RV7 but obviously had not read the instructions & had far too much pressure on. The left wheel burst in to flames coming down the taxi way. I was having a cup of tea on the veranda & the other bloke there yelled "He's on fire". I didn't even think & ran straight into the club house, grabbed a 9kg dry powder extinguisher off the wall & ran out to the taxiway about 50-60 metres away.

As  I got there the pilot shut down & the flames that were being blown straight back then went straight up onto the bottom of the fuel tank. A good burst of powder doused it but it restarted & I emptied the entire 9kgs onto the fire but not before the tyre exploded.

I could have just sat there & watched the pilot get barbecued I suppose.

  17. I had the seat rails give way in a C172 about 30 years ago. A friend had just imported it from the US & it had been sitting in the desert for several years after being impounded by the DEA. It had a 180hp engine but the paint & interior was stuffed. This was before he fully refurbished it. It had a coarse prop but climbed out really well with the extra power. The seat let go at about 2-300 feet & the effect on AoA was a sudden jerk up. Instinctively I made a grab for the top of the panel & somehow got the nose down before the panel (plastic fascia cover) ended up coming off on my lap. Ultra scary but I survived.

It didn't look like that to me as it was a completely smooth AoA increasing curve. The casual attitude of some of those on the ground after witnessing this was awful.

  18. State Health Minister Brad Hazzard said on TV that NSW was awash with Astra Zeneca vaccine. My wife rang our local medical centre where our GP is and they said "We don''t have any and don't know when the next batch will arrive". I got her in at the vaccination centre when I went for my 2nd dose. They still had to have a check to see if there was enough before confirming that though. The entire process is abysmal and does not seem to be improving.

Then there is the advice message. AZ is produced in Melbourne, then No it will be produced in Melbourne when the equipment is installed, then everything is good to go but No there are trial runs etc. Then the blood clot over reaction. First good for everyone, then not for under 60s then under 50s then under 40s then good again for anyone over 40, then over 18 with GP consent.

Now the latest study of 1.37 million people from Europe is the risk of blood clots is the same for both AZ & Pfizer. Not yet published in the Lancet but about to be. What then? You can bet that this information will be totally mishandled as well.

As I understand it the Melbourne facility can only produce 1 million doses a week so 6 months to vaccinate everyone once or a year to fully vaccinate everyone. But AZ is in theory on the way out. With all the latest data it should be ramping up. We can produce it locally & it costs about $4.00 a dose as AZ have said they are not profiting from it. Pfizer on the other hand cost $40.00 a dose. Pfizer made 19.2 billion in the last quarter, 92% up on the previous quarter. Why are we lining the US billionaires club pockets?

Now superhero Hunt reckons Moderna will be approved "Shortly" but with no specified timeframe but probably within 2 weeks and begin rollout mid September with a vague "Moderna vaccine should arrive in mid September".
