Spitfire Open Cockpit Days Three times a year the RAAF 79 Squadron Spitfire MK Vc UP-O is open for your inspection. Langdon Badger will show specific items, such as: the early Royal Flying Doctor display an early QANTAS display a Wright brothers postcard commemorating the World’s first controlled flight in 1903 Admiral Yamamoto’s propeller a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine a photo of 79 Squadron’s Alec Chomley bailing out at sea Japanese invasion money a secret invasion plan WWI engines and propellers a stealth bomber watch Coastwatchers’ chairs Spitfire items including a real Supermarine ashtray and story photographs of 79 Squadron Spitfires in action during WWII camp life in the Pacific. A pilot will then show you the cockpit, explaining how the gun sight and the IFF radio work, and how you blow the IFF radio up if caught behind enemy lines. Another volunteer will explain the airframe itself and how it was made 70 years ago. This takes one-and-a-half hours, starting at 10 am. Langdon then takes questions, and having flown both a Spitfire and Mustang can tell you the difference between them.

The Canberra Airport Open Day is happening again on Sunday 6 April from 9.30am to 1.30pm, and will feature loads of aircraft displays and children's activities. Visitors to the Open Day can climb aboard aircraft from Qantas, Qantas Link and Virgin Australia, the world-famous Connie�� aircraft from the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society, along with a Caribou, Catalina flying plane and DC3/C47. Visitors will also have the opportunity to get up close to smaller aircraft, Airport Fire Truck and a selection of our celebrated warbirds. There will be 5 thrilling aerobatic displays throughout the day including formation displays, handling display by the Red Baron Pitts Special, solo Roulette aerobatic displays and a high energy display by a Fastrack Extra. Royal Aero Club of Western Australia The Good Friday Rotto Bun Run is a tradition at RACWA and a great fund raiser for the RFDS. The Australian Aerobatic Club Adelaide Chapter welcomes and invites all AAC and AAC chapter members, their family and friends to the 2014 S.A. State Aerobatic Championships being held at Murray Bridge airfield on April 2nd through 5th, 2014. Pilots who are not current members are invited to join the Adelaide chapter and you would then be eligible to compete, subject of course to having the required approvals and endorsements. Our chapter members would be more than happy to discuss this option with you at any time. To encourage pilots to enter and compete at their first aerobatic contest, the charge for joining the Adelaide chapter is just $29 for the year and the club has made the entrance fee for the ENTRY category $0.00 if you ha��ve got an aerobatic endorsement we urge you to come along and give it a try. You don'��t need to be really good to fly competition, just safe and keen, and the club will help you progress from there to go as far as you want to take it. The steam plane has been discussed in two previous threads - here's what I said on one of them: Go to Wikipedia and search for "Steam Aircraft". There is a good article there with a lot of references to the Besler steam aircraft. Scroll down to the bottom to find useful links to further information. What's missing is the critique on the design and the reasons it never went past a prototype. According to the 1930's article the engine weighed 180lb. (81kg) and it could do 400 miles on 10 gallons (38 litres) burning fuel oil at 800F (but didn't say how much). A condenser reclaimed the steam, cooling it to be reintroduced to the water tank, claiming 80-90% efficiency. One article claimed the Beslers were aiming for 100% reclamation "where upon they could remain aloft indefinitely." Journalists were clueless back then too! Another article said the engine was 500lb (225kg). There are a number of newspaper archive sites which have contemporary reports, but most appear to be of the "media release" variety - the Yanks being good at publicity. I guess the problems were the fear of sharing the craft with fire, fuel & boiling water and the logistics of including extra weight required for steam generation vs the internal combustion engine. Hastings District Flying Club - www.hdfc.com.au Port Macquarie Fly-In and Fly & Spy Saturday 22nd March 2014 Hastings District Flying Club invites all aviators to gather in beautiful Port Macquarie for a weekend of aviation fun and fellowship. On Saturday interested aircrew are invited to participate in our Fly & Spy fun observation trial or simply soak up the friendly club atmosphere. Fly and Spy involves teams answering questions as they fly a set course in the local area and does not involve difficult navigation. There is $600 in prize money on offer as well as the dreaded Cabbage. Food and drink will be available throughout the day. A welcome/ presentation dinner will be held in the clubhouse Saturday night.
