Quote The British were content to fit a couple of .303 MG's to aircraft, while the German aircraft carried .50 cal and 20mm cannon.
actually half-inch grade MGs were unusual/rare on German types as at 1940 Blitzkrieg /Battle of Britain era...the then-current Bf109E-model itself carried, sure, 2X20mm shortened Oerlikon style guns in wings , (which had their own shortcomings btw..not as good as the Mauser MK151 20mm they came out with a year or so later) and......... 2 rifle-calibre 7.92mm in cowling.
the closest I can think of is the MG131 13mm, slightly larger than .50-bore..it came in in the initial model F-update Bf109 firing through prop, with, once more two rifle-bore 7.92s above it...then later with the FW190As tasked with tackling the 8thAF 4-motor raids, they raised the --once more two rifle-callibre 7.92s on front deck of FW190, to the 13mm guns for extra bomber-destroyer firepower..but, yeah, not much Luftwaffe stuff was actually not using either or both 7.92mm and/or 20mm as at 1940.
