Skippy wrote "Would contacting Sonex /Aero V engines help?" They're on the list Skip. Currently Aerovee seem to be offering dual electronic ignition. I've posted to the Corby owners group & will try the Sonex owners/ users group too. Great Plains (VW conversions) were an active supplier of engines & parts but appear to have shut down.

My Corby has an Aeropower (VW conversion) engine. The primary ignition is a Slick 4216 magneto, which will require a 500 hr inspection in 12 - 18 months. It appears the 4216 is no longer produced or supported. Champion's current 4 cylinder magnetos are the 4300 series, for which 500 hr inspection kits are available. Has anyone with a VW conversion encountered this? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

I was told Wudinna (YWUD) is a good place to stop. Hotel(s) & Motels if overnight. Avgas is available and, as aerodrome is adjacent to the town, Mogas should be too. And ASIC's are not required!

I was one of six Bathurst Soaring Club members in four aircraft (C182, Maule M4, Hornet Cub & Corby Starlet), who enjoyed an 808nm five day trip around NSW (& briefly VIC) last week. Day 1 Bathurst – Temora (fuel, brunch). Temora – Hay (fuel). Hay – Mungo Lodge Day 2 Guided tour around the (dry) lake & its World Heritage features. Day 3 Mungo Lodge – Swan Hill (fuel, lunch) Visited the Catalina Museum, Lake Boga. Day 4 Swan Hill – Tocumwal (fuel, lunch) Visited the Aviation Museum & the Gliding Club hangar (one of the original, huge WW2 hangars, which accommodated B24 Liberators) Swan Hill – Temora (fuel) Day 5 Temora – Bathurst. Cancelled planned visit to the Temora Museum, due encroaching weather at Bathurst. All together a most enjoyable trip. Both aviation Museums are well worth the visit and comprehensively detail the importance of these aerodromes / lake during WW2.

Premium unleaded Mogas (Shell Vortex 98 in our case) does not contain ethanol.

Thanks 0032 (& everyone else who responded). Firstly we've determined it's running rich because of the sooty plugs (& also a sooty exhaust). The fuel consumption hasn't changed - historically 14.7 lph. The engine is operating normally - no problems at idle, cruise or WOT. Most of our flying is cross country of >1 hrs at 2850 - 2900 rpm, giving a TAS of 103Kts. Re your mechanical fuel pump - you determined it was flooding at idle because revs were not constant / surging?

Our privately operated J160C (2200) has approx 610hrs over 17 years. Over the last 20hrs the engine has been running rich, as when removed the NGK spark plugs are a dense sooty black (prior to that they'd always been light tan). The only work / mods to the carby have been; in 2008 per JSB 018-1, Idle jet #35, Main jet #245 & Needle #290. In 2022 the diaphragm was replaced. Until about 20 hrs ago we used Avgas but since have changed to Shell Premium 98. The fuel level in the bowl is, as per the book, 13mm below the top of the bowl. Advice / suggestions please. I think the requirement for all licenced pilots (including students) is to have an AVID card. AFAIK the ASIC is only required for pilots who regularly fly into security controlled aerodromes. An AVID is issued by CASA, following a background security check.

Three years ago AOPA were about to tackle this issue. https://aopa.com.au/the-battle-over-asic-cards-begins/ I'm not a member of AOPA & am not aware if this is still being actively pursued.
