BrendAn Posted August 8 Posted August 8 I have fitted a tacho from a j160 and pickup sender. It is bouncing all over the place. Wondering if anyone has experience with setting these tachs up. Apparently there are 3 configurations for different flywheels. VID20260808134212.mp4

kgwilson Posted August 8 Posted August 8 When I built my aircraft (2014) I routed the VDO tacho wires in the same loom as most of the others and had a similar problem as they were getting induction current from the others. The wires should be in a twisted pair and kept away from others as far as I can recall. You could use shielded wires as an alternative. Anyway by separating them the tacho has functioned perfectly since I did that. 1 1

Another thing I need to look up what the air gap should be for the pickup. 1
BrendAn Posted August 9 Author Posted August 9 i looked up the inductive sensor air gap and it said if the gap exceeds 1 mm the tacho will have erratic readings. that may be the problem because i guessed it without feeler gauges. 1
440032 Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Seen this before in mine 20 years ago. Tacho pickup was not close enough to the two steel tabs on the flywheel. Adjust pickup or tabs to close the gap. I didn't measure anything, just set it. Rock steady ever since. 2
