I like to pour a bit of petrol or diesel in to the filter to thin the oil and then run it through a coffee filter in a funnel, they tend to hold up better than paper towel 3 1
facthunter Posted Wednesday at 03:42 AM Posted Wednesday at 03:42 AM With a New Motor Cut the Filter open at the first Oil change. If metal evident try to work out why. Some new motors can have swarf in them from inadequate cleaning before assembly. IF I found that I'd be dropping the sump and check all bearings and oil pump intake screen and let whoever supplied it Know and ask what they want done. You don't want to be caught far from Home and at the Mercy of the Local Mechanic.. Nev 1

facthunter Posted Wednesday at 06:07 AM Posted Wednesday at 06:07 AM You check what's in the Element mainly. Use a Magnet to sort out the steel and Iron particles Wash the others with mineral turps or kero so you can see better.. Like panning for Gold. 1

Also, dry sump so not sure what the next step will be if there's large particles in the oil. But have a good workshop at the airfield to pick their brains or more likely if something serious, hand it over to them. 2
facthunter Posted Wednesday at 10:23 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:23 PM My comment was relates to cars Mainly. On a Plane I recommend doing it all the time. Nev

facthunter Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Can you explain what is wrong? I'm going for Higher rated filters lately. Element durability, Higher temp and synthetic oil rated (size considerations) and Micron rating. Usually has an ST after the normal number. For larger size you have to delve in deeper and Make sure there's room for it. IF you buy them right there's little extra cost if you look around and but More at a time. Good for things Like Hydraulic Lifters and reduce wear generally. Nev

There were maybe 3 slivers of roughly similar dimensions.
