I remember these "Dacs" well. They first became well known when they were featured in an article in National Geographic way back in August 1983. There was a nice picture of one on the front cover. That article got me interested in aviation but first there were the kids, a house with mortgage etc.
Haven't ultralights moved on from there!!!

I really like your photos, Philthy

This cannot be classed as an ultralight: I can't see the prop.Check out the jetpack -
keanlim, did you ever make that flight to Indonesia?

I am planning to order a kit plane for me to start on some time during 2011. I am still deciding which one to get but I have a short short-list of STOL-capable, high-wing, all-metal kit planes.
Are there any aeroplane builders, kit plane assemblers or "microlight" constructors out there between the Tararuas and the Pacific?
I would be interested what you are building.

A very interesting article. I think John King really hated the Alice Springs situation. Alice Springs traffic movements per month equals Los Angeles in less than two days.

Thanks Davidh10 and Bryon.

That sounds like a great bag. Is it possible to post a picture of this bag?A bit about my bag.1. It is collapsible. IE. not hard sides. This is so when I take out my big stuff it takes up very little room.2. Don't bother with lots of pockets. Carry your flight planning stuff in a pencil case. Then there is only one place to look for it! My pencil case is big enough to hold my whiz wheel, maps, weight and balance sheet (laminated), pens, pencils, spare headset battery, etc.
My current bag was $5 at a cheap as chips type place and only has one pocket. The pocket has my sunglasses, small binoculars, PLB and a small camera in it. that fills that up. The main part of the bag has my cap, kneeboard, headset and ERSA and 500ml water bottle.
My bag has a lot in it but everything is really easy to get to :-)

My flight instructor told me that I will be needing a kneeboard but she doesn't like any of the ones available in either Australia or New Zealand because they are generally too large. She imports batches of small kneeboards from North America suitable for two pilots in a small cabin.
As soon as the next batch arrives (probably next month), and I can see what brand they are, I will let you know some more details.

How does CASA tax planes that use Mogas? Someone flying behind a Rotax is really paying for the next motorway extension :big_grin:Just dont ask the reason for the $0.03 Per Ltr tax increase on Avgas.... :Disappointed: -

Weight is always an enemy in light aircraft so I was wondering how heavy some of this APs are?

Hi Tomo, What kind of camera did you use for this video? Thanks Cameron,This particular video was done with a still camera actually! that is why it is a bit slow at focusing... He just held it.BTW: I really like the video footage and the editing :)

How amazing: a phone that has gone full circle!!I've been laughing at that lately. I have a Nokia N82 from 2007, which has a 5MP camera, and a second camera facing the user! I even have skype on it! Revolutionary!:PIt has internet capability so that you can use Skype, so that you can phone someone over the internet.
That's great: a phone you can use for talking with!

Baggage Space question ...
I'm pleased you saw a CH-750. I have read a number of reviews that said, in a polite way, that Americans' behinds had grown considerably over the last three decades and that the CH-701 was no longer large enough to carry their big asses/donkeys. That is why they needed to develop the CH-750. When I look at the performance figures, I really wonder if they're any better off with the bloated 750? The specs look pretty disappointing.I haven't tried the 750, but did see the first one at Oshkosh. Nearly everyone looking at it was dreaming of carrying BIG men and complaining about "...not enough baggage space..." If they load up like that behind an 0-200 they're going to be disappointed in performance.....JG
I'm wondering if ICP did the stretch to XL for the same reason as Zenith? Nevertheless, ICP managed to extend the VG to the VG XL with performance pretty much intact.
JG, a question: Was the baggage space in the CH-750 larger or smaller than in the Savannah?
-
Hi Me&K,We had heard about this site and hoped it would help as we build our Savannah. A quick search has already been useful on the subject of primers. We'll keep in touch.Have you started building your Savannah yet?
-
I am also considering the CH-750 as an alternative to the Savannah ...the main reason is the folding wings option that ~sadly~ Savannah has never brought on board. I have sent some emails to Zenith asking some straightforward questions re the CH-750 but all to no avail. My feeling is that they do not like my questions about removing the slats. The other questions relate to getting the weight to fit into the OZ/NZ ultralight/microlight 544kg weight limit. The 750 kit has been substantially simplified, so i suspect but have not verified that the buildtime for a 750 kit is now more competitive with the Savannah.Did you ever make the choice between the two aircraft, pitfield?

Are these parts going to be delivered by Australia Post? (If you are wondering why Australia Post is also called "snail mail" look carefully at their symbol in the picture: You'll clearly see that there is a red snail in the white circle!)Parts ordered today and some materials bought as well... looks like I am making a move along...I have followed your CH-601 project with interest, Adrian. I hope the next stage goes well.

This is an excerpt quote from the gliding training manual in NZ:Would this also be required of a logbook? Some tips on using and looking after your logbook:
Read the information and instructions in the front of the logbook.
Normally, use one line for each flight. However, you can block a
series of short consecutive flights in one line but always accurately
record the number of launches made. This applies mainly to winch
ops.
Write / print neatly; others may need to read what you write.
Use the same colour pen. A different colour can then be used to
highlight noteable flights like first solo.
Always bring your logbook to the field; be careful not to damage
it or to lose it, as it has to last many years.
Keep your logbook up to date. Entries should be made as soon as
practically possible after flying.
Keep your logbook in a safe place when at home.
Take a photocopy of the most recent page every so often and
certainly before traveling away with your logbook. It is insurance
in case of ever losing your logbook.
It is acceptable to use abbreviations to get maximum value out of
the space in the remarks column.

Does the high-end Nokia rate at all? Are there any good 'aviation' applications available for the Nokias' Symbian operating system?

Perhaps they Seventh Day Adventists should go back to Coorangbong and leave Ayr Airport for the local community: two problems solved in one go!Up here in the North we have a drama going on with Ayr airport at the moment. Ayr airport is supposed to be a community airport, and has always been. Along comes a Seventh Day Adventist mob calling themselves World Adventure Group or whatever, and wants to lease the airport (read : control the airport totally) for their "missionary training school". Like hullo, what about the rest of us who have supported and kept the airfield going all these years.-

Perhaps that comment relates to Seventh Day Adventists. However, there are still many missionaries flying with Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF); see: http://www.maf.org.au/Maybe missionaries don't need to learn to fly anymore. -
Those MAF people are truly an amazing, dedicated bunch of aviators!Bit off topic I guess, but thought some of you might be interested in seeing some of these... Got a friend that flew in PNG for 20 odd yrs for MAF, makes you appreciate living in Aus!
