  1. This is typical of Q's management - buggering around for 8 days with "specialised aircraft lifting equipment that has to be flown in" to unbog it. The B717 has a MTOW of 49,900kgs and it's 30,617kgs empty.

As it stands, it probably weighs no more than 40,000kgs, and probably a fair bit less. Get in a truck mounted 100 tonne crane, from a reputable crane operator who is skilled at lifting all types of loads, and they would wrap 4 to 6 wide flat woven slings around the strong points of the fuselage, hook them to a big spreader bar, and they would lift the aircraft straight up and out, and swing it around, and place on the taxiway.

But no-o-o-o, that costs money that's got to be paid out, to an outside contractor, and Q management wouldn't entertain a thought like that. No, they'd rather lose a weeks income from the aircraft, cost themselves a fortune in internal labour costs, and freighting debogging equipment from around the country - but it avoids paying out good money!

  2. Methusala, you are a victim of the exceptionally subtle disinformation campaign pushed by the Russian Govt. The Cold War propaganda machine has been finely honed for todays world and takes massive advantage of todays rapid and widely-used social media communication channels - which are a godsend in that users can be permanently anonymous - to promote a "false narrative" around any warlike action that Russia indulges in.

The narrative you have been sucked into believing, is one that ignores Putins often-stated, unshakeable beliefs, that Russia needs to return to the Stalinist, Soviet era, where Russia dominated and controlled vast numbers of countries in Eastern Europe - all of which were taken over by Communist forces, using military force, during the disruption of WW2.

Putin worships Stalin and the Stalinist era and has a stated aim to return Russia to that once-dominant position in the region, by whatever means it takes, to displace any democratically elected Govt with one that is highly favourable to Russia and Putins aims.

  3. .....had got bored with no "kills" on the local highways and who thought they might be able to nail someone in an aircraft landing on a road (no rego, no insurance etc, etc, yadda, yadda).

But the NSW HP soon became bored with the slow speeds of the aircraft and set off to find other, more rewarding returns - thus leaving the fly-in organisers in the lurch, with no accurate speed measuring abilities.

But it wasn't too long before an agent from Turbine Inc was on the scene, offering the companys latest CASA-approved product, a speed-measuring device that could also be used in conjunction with a....

  4. Bidding is at $62,500 with just under 4 days to close of auction. The original link to Pickles that I posted above, no longer works, Pickles moved the auction link to a different page.

3 genuine bidders at this point, 2 from W.A., 1 from S.A. I still think they'll let it go at $120K, fixing bent aeroplanes get spendy, real fast.

  5. You can acquire Kreem from the U.K. via eBay ....

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/384669559510

There's also KBS and POR-15, both readily available. I don't know if these two products are as flexible as Kreem when set, but I've used POR-15, and it is an exceptionally good product.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/274974376963

POR-15 is readily available from eBay - otherwise, many paint distributors carry it, or can get it in for you.

Don't buy too much, once you mix the batch of epoxy, the entire can must be used, you can't store leftover POR15 for later use.

  6. I really don't understand how such an experienced pilot could fail to carry out what is the most basic preflight check, on every single thing that flies.

One can only presume that this was a developing pattern of "shortcuts" in preflight procedures on the part of this pilot, that no-one picked up.

Complacency, combined with familiarity, combined with developing bad habits, will get you killed every time.

  7. ....without warning, a 912ULS powered Drifter roared into view and aimed straight at them in a shallow dive! The SWAT team threw their heavy gear away and dived into the nearest roadside ditch.

As the Drifter roared over their heads, missing them by what seemed like only about 3 feet - but which in reality, was actually about 20 feet - they heard a gloating cackling voice, and saw the faint glint of a.......

  8. They talk about these daring blokes carrying their cojones around in a wheelbarrow - but those girls proved you don't really need huge cojones at all - you just need to make sure your nerves are like steel, and your grip is like a vice, and you never lose it!

  9. The 13 Black Cats advertised they'd do anything by way of hair-raising aerial stunts, for a price. Possibly the one that took most watchers breaths away, was the stunt where Al Johnson and Ken "Fronty" Nichols set up a table and chairs on the top wing of a biplane, dressed as cowboys, and drinking and pretending to play a card game.

But then a quarrel over supposed "cheating" at the cards breaks out, guns are drawn, a "shoot-out" entails - and the loser is seen to fall from the aircraft. But unbeknowns to watchers on the ground, an unseen thin cable pops open the "losers" parachute, and he gently parachutes to the ground!

  10. Shipping costs have nearly tripled since 2020, thanks to the pandemic, shutdowns of shipping movement due to crew quarantining (a big ship can cost up to $20,000 a day to run), a total shambles in supply chain smooth movement (did anyone see the nearly 1000 ships recently waiting offshore, to load or unload at Shanghai, due to Shanghai's lockdown?) - plus the normal pandemic crewing shortfall problems due to COVID-19 sickness.

Refineries and land transport have been similarly affected by COVID. About 80 of Australias petrol and diesel now comes ready-refined to Australian fuel standards from Singapore, Korea or Japan.

I don't even like to think what will happen to fuel supplies and prices, if a war starts between the two Koreas.

  11. ...without even his drink in his hand, that he thought he'd previously had. Cappy leaned against the wall of the RSL to stop the world from spinning around him for a bit. He knew  they wouldn't let him back in too soon, and that Sudanese bloke looked mean.

The sun was getting hotter, and he was getting thirsty again - but at least the world had stopped spinning. He spotted an Uber coming down the street, and tried to hail him - completely forgetting that you can't hail Ubers.

He rummaged for his phone. His phone!! - It was gone!! - it must have been that sleazy-looking Sudanese bloke - Cappys mind went back to that article he read about the bloke who cycled the length of Africa, and who said, "Remember, every African you meet, is out to scam you, rip you off, or steal from you!"

His heart sank, that was his 15 year old Samsung, and it was the best phone he'd ever owned, and now it was........

  12. Quote

RFguy - "does in this case the back pressure that was never there before appreciably change the heat flow out of the cylinder?"

Oh yes, the heat flow out of the cylinder is increased by an appreciable amount. That's why an EGT gauge is an important part of the gauges on heavy duty diesels when you're running a turbo and operating at full engine loads. It's easy to melt valves if you keep the "pedal to the metal" with a heavy load. Probably not so crucial on cars, because the only time they get a real heat load, is long-distance, non-stop driving at high speeds in high ambient temperatures. But an EGT is a crucial gauge for aircraft engines, because they largely operate under heavy load.

  13. The additional exhaust heat from turbocharging is directly due to the substantially increased volume of air being pumped into the engine, resulting in more fuel being added, resulting in more power - which results in more exhaust heat.

A turbocharged engine under load has a vastly increased chance of burning valves, thanks to that heat. Not for nothing are heavy duty turbocharged diesel valves made of stellite and other heat-resisting metal alloys.

One of the interesting things about turbochargers is that increased EGT = more turbine speed = more air being forced in. This is because of the increased exhaust gas expansion with increased heat.

The average turbocharger turbine blades usually run at 80,000 - 100,000RPM under full load.

  14. Well, you learn something new every day, I've never heard of metho and shellac being used to hold beads in place. Facthunter must have learned that during his apprenticeship, just after WW1. :cheezy grin:

I guess, with the advent of the amazing range of sealants and adhesives today, there's probably a Sikaflex product designed to hold beads onto rims and which can also be easily peeled off.

Now that brings up the point, that I've not seen anyone mention carrying some Silastic! It's on a par with duct tape/Gorilla tape for holding things together!

  15. Facthunter is correct, don't use WD-40 on natural rubber products, because it contains a large percentage of petroleum spirit as a carrier.

Despite the WD-40 site saying it is safe for rubber - there's rubber, and there's "rubber".

The manufacturers site says you can use WD-40 on weatherstrips to keep them soft and pliable - but the fact is, weatherstrips don't contain a lot of natural rubber - and if the natural rubber in them is softened by WD-40 - well, that's O.K., because you want weatherstrips to remain soft and pliable. But you don't want rubber tyres and tubes being softened by WD-40.

Weatherstrips are made of EPDM rubber - a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) mix of plastic and rubber, and a thermoplastic olefin (TPO) polymer/filler blend.

Tyres and tubes still contain a very large percentage of natural rubber, even though they also contain butyl and other ingredients such as oils.

So, the natural rubber in tyres and tubes, WILL be adversely affected by spraying WD-40 on it.

Talcum powder, baby powder, French chalk - all basically the same thing - powdered talc (the main additive is perfumes) - is highly suitable as a rubber lubricant.

Talc used liberally between tube and tyre will prevent a tube from being destroyed if it goes flat at speed, because of its lubricant ability.

I've personally proved this over several adverse, high-speed tyre deflation events on both gravel and bitumen roads.

Talc also reduces heat buildup as a result of friction between tube and tyre - not that that is generally a problem with aircraft, unless you do a lot of high-speed taxiing over long distances.

Grit-free handcleaner makes for a simple tyre bead lubricant, and you can use it to wash your hands when you're finished. Otherwise, a weak solution of washing-up detergent works well, too.

  16. ......there were specially-positioned West African Crocodiles waiting for you, if you fell. Now, it needs to be widely advertised that the West African Crocodile is also known as the Sacred Crocodile, and this is because it was once worshipped as a God - and the West African Crocodiles have a mystical connection with Bazoule.

These Crocodiles also represent the souls of ancestors, and if a West African Crocodile dies, it is given a funeral worthy of a human.

However, the entrants on the Ninja Warriors Show knew nothing of this background to the West African Crocodile - they knew only that Crocodiles were waiting for them if they failed - and that is something they dared not contemplate, and which only spurred them onto Ninja Warrior greater efforts.

In fact, to this very day, you only have to mention the word "Crocodile" to Cappy, and his nostrils dilate, his breathing and heartbeat quickens, and that famous finger grip strength immediately shows up, as he leaves finger-deep impressions in whatever is near to hand - just as he does to the instrument panel whenever he's flying as pax to Turbo. Accordingly, you never....
