  1. Been talking with the people at Inglewood, and they’re eager to name the coming fly-in on the Anzac Day weekend, the ‘Wayne Fisher Memorial Fly-In'. That sounds very appropriate, as that was where Wayne went to play, and so many of us greatly enjoyed his presence there over many years.Due to liability and bureaucratic considerations, the organizers at Inglewood do not declare, sponsor, or advertise this as an official fly-in; it’s meant to be just a spontaneous ‘gathering of the flock’. The people of Inglewood just provide an ideal venue, a very warm welcome, and catering. It’s up to us to spread the word, so please use all your social networking connections to spread the word, and actively encourage one and all to show up this year.

The turn up the last couple of years has been less than it used to be, but when it’s the ‘Wayne Fisher Memorial Fly-In’, this could be the biggest ever! Be there to be a part of it!

The organizers at Inglewood have made changes to make it more convenient for us. The dinner will now be on Saturday night instead of Sunday, and will probably be held at the airfield. As per usual, the locals will be doing all that they can to make it convenient for us, including fuel runs to town.

If you’ll be wanting accommodation in town, better make your bookings right away.

Could be good if someone would ferry Wayne’s personal Drifter and put it on display as a silent tribute. His presence will still be there, in a big way…….

Once again, please do spread the word, and plan to be there!

    JG

I sure hope everyone makes an effort to be there.

Wayne deserves the tribute, and Inglewood deserves the support for their warm welcome over many years.

  3. I know of maybe four incidents here in Oz related to fuel tank related post-impact fires, how many more have there been throughtout the world, since the R44 was put into service ???...and how many unnecessary resulting deaths..Robinson probabily won't want to issue an AD as an admission of guilt

When we stopped in Cootamundra day before yesterday, a mechanic was calibrating a bladder tank that he had just installed in an R44. He said that he had several more booked in to be done as well.......

  4. Need some "OUTBACK" info. We're returning from Vic back to SE QLD via the red centre.

Our overnight stops are planed to be; Arkaroola, Coober Pedy (underground if we can), Curtin Springs (near Uluru), William Creek and then somewhere between there and home if we need to. Are there any of these places you would recommend not camping at? And advise us to book ahead?

Places we plan to get fuel and places we plan to drop into for a rest and top up the tanks; Renmark, Arkaroola, Cooper Pedy, Ayers Rock, Oodnadatta, William Creek, Birdsville and where ever else we stop on our way home. Before I ring and arrange fuel, is there any of these you don't recommend and do you recommend an alternative?

Arkaroola - Excellent for everything! All fuels. Simple donga accommodation for $15 last time I was there.

Coober Pedy - A long way from town, probably no taxi service. Underground hotel should pick up from airfield.

Curtin springs - Free camping but about 2km walk. Could walk in and probably get a lift out to bring in camping gear.... Good reasonable price meals.

Google will tell you the prices of accommodation most places.

All those fuel stops OK. Maybe call-out fee at Coober Peddy and Oodnadatta....

    Have a great flight!

  5. The truck colour change still confuses me ! Eric 026_cheers.gif.2a721e51b64009ae39ad1a09d8bf764e.gif

I tell that on the page 'Finding a Vehicle'. The first one didn't have enough power for all those high mountain passes, so changed to the truck with massive power, 7.3 litres turbo....

  6. That's really good news. My last trip outback I had to mess around with drum stock at Maree because I couldn't get it at Leigh Creek. With only 3hr20min between full tanks and deathly silence, fuel availability is a critical factor in my flight plans rather than comfort stops.025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif

    kaz

Remember that Arkaroola has fuel, both Avgas and Mogas.

  7. adjusted float level to specs(with floats removed 1/2 inch from the top..) still the same (or getting worse..idles slightly rough constantly, and the same symtoms as prior, just replaced the plugs with the same as I removed ngk standered and noticed package recomends NOT to use in flying machines,,should I be useing the aridium equivalent? have not run yet as "the rains R ear"bad_mood.gif.04f799b8c2da677a1c244b54433f2aa7.gif,will do a run with new plugs if no different will pull down carbie (just a thought -might just fit the old carbie for comparrasen?)take it easy

Regular NGK plugs are just fine. The only plug fowl in had in 1000hrs with a 447 was one of the fancy iridium ones.....

Remove idle adjustment screw and blow out the idle circuit with compressed air.

Check that the needle clip is secure in one of the middle slots.

Check that the needle clip is under the nylon retainer, not on top....

Also check that the enricher valve is closing properly.

That's all I can remember right now.....

  8. Nope not fuel pump!ran the same with no electric fuel pump, ran engine70% then switched off in that position and removed plugs, both ceramic,s light brown but 1 plug electrode black, will buy 2 plugs and see if not will pull down carbie and inspect and clean jets

I haven't used those carbies for some years so can't remember for sure, but that float level 4mm below top of bowl sounds very high..... Also fits the symptoms......

  9. Coolangatta airport, pub just outside lighties access gate, used to have good counter lunches and if you tied down the aerofloppy thingy.. coldest beer around and if you didn't tie down, the cokes were just as cold.Forgot home!! Couple of pubs within walking distance of Dalby Aerodrome, or if you are feeling lazy, some one is sure to offer a lift'

On the other side of the country, how about Forrest.... caretakers have a bar, food and fuel and when I was there last, great hospitality.

Yeh, Dalby is a walk, but the airfield is about as close to town as it can be.

Forest is a good one, and right where you might need a rest...

  10. This thread initiated by JG was certainly more in the spirit of adventure,080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif rather than just simply recommending a place to have a beer or two. Of course after a hard days' cross-country you may certainly need a beer, 026_cheers.gif.2a721e51b64009ae39ad1a09d8bf764e.gif however when we say 'pub' we really should be thinking overnight accomodation, after a couple of beers, so we can get up super-fresh in the morning for more adventure flying .012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif........................................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

Exactly correct, Maj. The list is especially meant for those travelling two-up in these little aircraft, so can't really carry full camping gear, or those who's partner refuses to sleep on the ground. I really prefer camping on deserted airstrips a long way from anyone, but it's kinda nice once in a while to have a couple of beers and a proper feed and a yarn with the locals. If you're camping at the airfield, bring your towel and have a freshup in the pub washroom, feels great!. The list has grown now so that when you first look at the map you'd think every airfield was suitable. But there's lots of country airfields too far for a comfortable walk and no taxi service, been there done that, with a cloud of mozzies for company.....

  11. Windsor, JG3 & MattoI have also flown into Palmyra on several occasions when having to go to meetings in Mackay.

I work with a gentleman that has a hanger at the Marion airstrip and he gave me contacts of some people at Palmyra. Marion doesn't have fuel but Palmyra has a fuel bowser and the guys are only too happy to help out with organising to meet me there and fuel up when required as long as you give them plenty of notice.

It is a very beautifull part of QLD to fly around. No landing fees. Just great hospitality by these wonderful folk.

Pm me if you are interested in the contact details

    Cheers

Ok..so this wasn't a flying trip...but a trip to an airfield...Days off...nothing much to so I just took a nice ride out to Palmyra Airfield south west of Mackay...Had previously seen a Thruster being flown from there...This time it was deserted with a few machines extending the drag strip run off area.

I spoke with a gentleman their called Greg and he showed me inside his hanger....he has a beautiful RV9a...said it took him about 2 years to build at a cost of about $80 000...cruises at 150knots.

It is the only Homebuilt at the strip...all the rest are GA except the Thruster 503 which is for sale. There is 8 hangers there and 2 more about to be built.

Should have asked to take a photo...

Excellent. Thanks for that useful news.

  12. Thanks for the input Hongie,One of the guys on the American PPC forums recommended I get this lens. I figured that if I find that I am needing a wider angle lens then I would get something like the 24-70 in the L series and then cover the majority of the spectrum. Although I do not know too much about this gear yet I agree with you about the L series quality. I have not read a bad report about them. They are expensive but I thought why buy a great camera then use a cheap lens. There is a huge amount to learn but I am enjoying the ride.

    John

Definitely need something like 28mm wide angle for best landscape effect....

Keep the shutter speed at least 250/sec to stop blurring due camera shake.

There's something mysterious about aircraft, flying nice and steady hands off, but as soon as you look through the viewfinder they act up like a rough horse.......

Study light and composition, far more important that camera and lens quality for final viewing effect.

    Good shot Greg.

Yeh, I measured 29 kts at one time. But very smooth that time of day, deceptive..... But still dead calm on the ground.

  14. I think its a great tradition.....I hopefully will do my first one 1/1/2013 either at Caboolture or up here at Booyal.....I hope to have my sav flying at the end of february this yearMark

Look forward to seeing your New Years photo next year, Mark.

Be good if there were lots of photos from here and there. Might start something....

  15. A tradition that I have kept for many years is to take off at very first light on New Years morning, and meet the sun at 5000 ft, then follow it down to the ground again.

What a great way to start the New Year!

So much better than nursing a sore head under a pillow....

Here's what I saw this year, over Somerset Dam, SE Qld.

Wishing everyone tailwinds in everything you do this coming year.

  16. A query:Have come across a 6.00-6 aviation tyre (McCreary brand) at a reasonable price. I want to know if it would be the same profile as the Condor 6.00-6.

I was considering Condors but these are so much better priced. Can anyone help?

    Bob

I much prefer the McCreary brand, the Condors are a lot heavier..... Profiles are similar.

Are there more of those McCreary's available?? A friend would like to get some.
