OK: Great footage of the snow and not too shaky IMO, but do you ever clean your windscreen? Looked like some mega bird plop on there!

My windscreen is overdue for replacement, but the other bloke flies from his black soil strip. Other members were grounded by the recent rain, but he has big wheels; quite a bit of his farm ends up stuck to his plane.

  2. This morning Quirindi Aero Club had a long-planned Open Day to shake a few would-be flyers out of the undergrowth. A small investment in radio and newspaper advertising brought several new faces to our monthly BBQ breakfast. Visitors got to talk to pilots and inspect the variety of aircraft that had flown in. Several also went up for a TIF around the district. We had three instructors in attendance, flying a Sting, a Tecnam and a Cavalon gyro.

In the crisp morning air the heated seats of the Cavalon and Sting were a big hit.  It looked like aviators are becoming soft, but this was offset by a hardy young bloke arriving in an unfaired, open gyro after flying an hour from the west. He wouldn’t let go of his hot cuppa.

At first light I flew east to video the snow on the hills behind Wallabadah; my dodgy efforts are below. Meanwhile another member did a much better job of capturing

the snow-covered Liverpool Range to our south.

Interesting. Mine is easy. Has adequate clearance to do it without tools or trouble…

I removed mine yesterday, using flat screwdriver blade to move the clip. Easy to get to on the four cylinder engine.

Glad I did, because it had some fine, dark sediment in it.
Never found anything in the bowl during the decade I burned AvGas.

Now that I’m using Shell 98, I’ll make a habit of regularly checking inside the bowl, plus running it dry to shut down.

… I'd rather have the tornados (knock on wood).   Guess its the "devil I know".

I’m impressed by those mass-produced tornado bunkers we see buried in Midwest backyards.

A few Aussies have installed similar shelters here to survive our massive bushfires.

I bought one of those for a bicycles. They are quite low output.

Some bicycle gear works well with our little aeroplanes but not lights and horns; we need many times the brightness and range. My favorite bike shop once found me a great little bicycle horn that they thought would be ideal for the plane.

I got them to blow it while I stood 20m away. Ear-splitting to those nearby, out in the street I could barely hear it.

Well politics being one of the big no, no’s...but just to bring some balance, I think Trump was awesome. Loved the fact he wasn’t a politician. He had great respect for the US military and was well on the road to getting them out of all the ME mess they were entangled in. He did achieve unheard of peace deals in the ME between Israel and other Arab states, it was a very quiet four years for Israel. He did pretty well compared to disaster Joe so far, rampant inflation, city destroying riots across the USA, highest fuel prices and shortages on record, warfare erupting all over the ME again, border security and immigration control in utter chaos. As for his medical team, Dr “death” Fauci, who funded cross over research at Wuhan labs and has tried to cover up this damn thing escaped out of their lab. This after Trump was called a bigot and racist after he called it. Yes, as someone commented earlier...it’s going to be a veeeery looong 4 years.

Good grief, F10. I have enjoyed your posts so far but this one is surely tongue rammed firmly in cheek...

How can you believe anything this serial liar says?
(Agree with your first few words; perhaps this discussion belongs on the Off Topic site.

...Another question, topping up your tanks (Mogas) with Avgas, to make it home, I guess that should not be a big issue?

In the last few years this site has hosted lots of discussions on fuel types and some of our more knowledgeable contributors have pointed out the quite different chemistries of AvGas and MoGas. Some have warned against running a “shandy”.

I’ve recently switched to car fuel, so keep 100LL in the RH wing tank and Shell 98 in the left.
The original plan was to start and takeoff on AvGas and swap tanks for cruise, but since Covid, I haven’t had anywhere to cruise to, so that AvGas tank hasn’t been topped up for a year or more.

...It's surprising that the SAC failed to understand the basic military tactic of never gathering all your major assets in one place...

Even after Pearl Harbour they were slow to learn. Japanese fighters flying over the mountains from Lae to attack Port Moresby were delighted to find Allied bombers and transports lined up in neat rows.

...The problem then is that the jaws do not have the quality (not tool steel), nor the correct hardening, to enable long life.

Add in rapid jaw wear, and a buildup of metal particles from the rivet shanks, and the scene is set for a short operating life....

    I suspected as much, 1T.

A simple fix has occurred to me: if the “teeth” are worn down enough to prevent the pin being gripped, why not simply grind a poofteenth off the flat face of each jaw? That would at least enable the “gums” of the worn-down teeth to grip the plurry pin. Will try it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, thanks for the link; after giving Discount Trader all my personal details three times, I may have ordered that item. Their website looks simple, but lots of others are easier to use.

As with too many of these firms, we rural people are forgotten; my small town is apparently a City or Suburb

  10. Does anyone know where I can buy a pop rivet gun that will last longer than a packet of rivets?

I have a collection of over a dozen, all lost their grip (I mightn’t be far behind).

I’ve tried all sorts of brands, from the best known to cheap and nasty, but all have failed me. The latest stopped pulling rivets after less than 100.

Strangely, when this happens, I go thru the discarded ones and one sometimes gets into the mood and actually grips a few rivets, then gives up again.

I’ve watched several repair videos in You Tube University, but none has actually explained how to get them to get a grip!

One aspect: some packets of rivets are significantly shorter than others.

Perhaps the pin diameter on some is too narrow?

That's almost certainly no exaggeration as all 3 of the Milne Bay airstrips align with the Bay N & S coasts for the reason that there isn't enough 'flat' land at the head of the Bay which would allow N - S direction takeoffs...

The runway was totally 'Marsden' matting in the 60's, but had sunken in places, and made the most frightening rattle under the aircraft. I always had visions of those steel sheets unhooking, and ripping the tyres to shreds. Happily, they stayed locked up - just as the Allied airstrip builders originally fitted them in 1942.  The weather in the Milne Bay area is usually atrocious - low ceilings, rains every day, and that hasn't changed in the interim since WW2.

Sorry about the thread drift, but I happened upon this excellent Doco on that battle. I’m impressed by the attention to detail and the narrator’s appreciation of great bravery one both sides.
Although pretty much unknown to the rest of the world, this great Australian victory was the first land defeat for the Japanese in their reach south.

Howdy all just been looking at a jabiru that’s been sitting in hanger I’ve just moved into.  Been there for 12 years no love, wondering if it’s worth making an offer and rebuilding it/ getting to airworthy condition? The other question 6’3 pilot, it looks small but I reckon I could fit ?

    Cheers

Hello Tyro; any Jab kept in a hanger should be in reasonable condition, but don’t be surprised if the engine barrels are rusted.

Don’t worry about the fit. I’m taller than you (1925mm) and had no trouble fitting into the smaller early-model Jabs.

...There has been a long standing recommendation that gauze filter medium, uncased in a clear body (for easy visual inspection) are the standard.

The gauze filters, I use, were about $6 each (I did purchase  about 20 to get the best price) but what price would you put on your life?

Can you suggest a brand name and seller?

My uncle flew Kittyhawks in PNG, sadly he's passed away. He was only 18 at the time and I recall him saying, in about 1965, that he was "sh1t scared the whole time".

One memorable report of the fighting at Milne Bay: the enemy was so close to the airfield that the P-40s were strafing them before they had time to retract their wheels.

A bit like reading about our RAAF personal sent to fly P40s to Papua New Guinea to fight japs after learning in tigers and low powered trainers. In the book 44 days it was mentioned several were lost on way up coast within hours of takeoff, training had consisted of go read the manual and taxi around.

the true pressures on RAAF pilots were probably much higher than the guy just wanting to have a nice toy, but results the same.

Clinton I’d like to read more about those P-40s. They appear in my mum’s war diaries- she was an aircraft observer and her account of 52 Kitty Hawks flying north is quite stirring, coming after months of defeats and ominous news about how close the enemy was getting.
