Why did you put so much yowie country between me and Evans Head? Not ready to cross that forest just yet, FD. Maybe next year. Good luck, hope lots do make the trip.

Woof woof!

Nice-looking aeroplanes, Ralph. I presume not many fliers go from 3-axial to weight-shift. How was the transition and do your feet sometimes forget which way to push (mine did)?

Welcome aboard, Drossi. When was this "Golden Age" of aviation?
Maybe we're in the middle of it now! Nostalgia usually has rose-coloured spex. My mum used to say that "the good old days" were, at the time referred to as "these hard times".
If your interest extends to military stuff, I have plans for an awesome aircraft designed by a bloke called Jiro Horikoshi.
I adapted the A6M to a 75% replica ultralight with Peugeot diesel engine (to achieve range similar to the original).

While engineers beaver away trying to get the best out of traditional designs, these people thought laterally:

Agree Nev. After spending weeks building a complex pair of fibreglass hoods for my previous engine (a VW 1600) I happened upon a Great Plains cooling kit. Absolutely simple and effective. If I had a similar horizontal fence around Jab engine it would be so easy to get at spark plugs, etc.

Welcome, Justin. Tell us about flying in your part of the world, where it looks like you need to be pretty tough. Canadians have made their mark on aviation. We just sweltered thru a 40 degree (and that's C, not F) Xmas with fake snow sprayed in shop windows.

Interesting, Oscar. Before finally fitting a Jab 2.2 I was hung up on the fear of glazing the bores. The little Jodel D-9 was first flown with 27 hp and most have a VW putting out 40-60 hp, so I was expecting to be cruising at about 2300 rpm.
We're told that's a bad rev band for a Jab, so mine gets 2800. I have forgotten about glazing. So far so good.

Know little about water take-offs except that it takes lots more power than getting off land. Keep us informed Maj.

I'm not too worried yet Nev, but I would like some indication of the hours it takes before lead build-up becomes an issue.
-
Interesting, Camel. Now that I have my own source of AvGas, my 2200 never gets fed Mogas. I am concerned that eventually lead will build up on the valve stems, because it runs rich and cool (EGT around 800 F).

Oscar, all this has got me excited, especially
"...an inhibiting set-up that allows you to (very easily) squirt a shot of hot engine oil into each cylinder after shut-down, better than twice the alternator capacity..."
Can you tell me more about this oil squirt system, as I was about to bodgy up some way to squirt lube down the carby throat before stopping the engine.
Regarding CAMit's extra alternator, why would it be needed if the recent Jabiru winding modification worked?

Were things any better in the new country?Yes! Everyone in Guernsey was happy when I was deported to Australia in 1970.....they couldn't stand my sense of humour.

...first get a fire permit from the RFS.

Perhaps our greatest challenge is that we can so easily reinforce the prejudices of people outside aviation. One bloke yesterday kept focussing on recent crashes. No amount of polite, informed reasoning would budge him from the firm conviction that the world would be better off without gyrocopters and home-builts.
Maybe deep down the poor sad land-bound bugger is jealous of our freedoms.

What's the chance of mounting a streamlined BRS atop the rotorhead, with cables running thru the hollow mast?
It might add enough reassurance for me to get in one.
-
There is an obvious, but less popular solution. Most of us would be a lot better off with less weight.

Why the similarity to that product name?Probably means virga.LaurieVirga is rain which never quite gets there.
-
Presumably the authorities have been doing their best to apprehend this flagrant violator of airspace rules.

...and where will you find three scale- model Ju-88s to assist your take-off?Love the idea of the Gigant, but not a lot of ground clearance with the undercarriage if it's built to scale... -
Thanks Maj, and you and yours have a great end-of-year break!Yes really Lyle nice paint job, and I do like the handies....thanks for the photos........and a merry Xmas to you and the family..............Maj.....

Can you remember the title, Ozzie? Jimmy Shtewart was a hero of mine, an actor who actually did these things for real. The actor Jimmy Stewart about his commanding and training b17 pilots in US and England is a good read.Another great red is "Samurai"

Wow, looks great Scotty. Nice grass field too, to complement the aircraft. Where is this?

Nope, Nev. the sticker shop stuffed up my order for ten large stars for the Southern Cross, so my grandies' dabs were used instead. Who sez a star is star-shaped anyway?OK..... Couch of Hands? Aboriginal relic. Nev

A new Oz engine on the way?

Thanks for keeping us informed, Bex. Exciting and frustrating times for you, just like becoming a dad for the first time.
