...I want it all, but it has to look good too!

... and the SAAA people don't have two heads.
Mixing with people who fly other types of machines is usually quite instructive. Hell, I sometimes even talk to gyro drivers!

Reminds me of the story about an old rancher being hauled into court. His case was announced as Cyrus Wilkes versus the State of Texas, to which he cringed: lord what a majority!...can it ever be the case that defendant and prosecutor are of equal power, strict liability successfully ties the lessor powered defendants hands behind his back, presumably to make the stoush more fair????????Andy -
Not so much brains as someone in authority showing a bit of nous. Using initiative is rarely good for your career prospects. We have to remember that most systems are like septic tanks: the really big chunks rise to the top.if they had any brains ...-

At my local accountant everyone, including the receptionist, seems to be a JP.I am renewing my ASIC. The CASA website has a long list, very long list, of people who can witness a statutory declaration. The RAA ASIC renewal form only allows for officials of RAA or a Justice of the Peace. The JP is an outmoded function, there are none anywhere near where I live. They are not referred to much these days. I took my renewal documents to my solicitor but she refused to sign them because the RAA documents called for a JP. I pointed out the CASA list but she said the RAA document is quite clear on its requirements. Why has RAA made it a hundred times more difficult to do this than CASA intended? Looks like I will have to make a trip to Melbourne to find an ageing JP.-

...but watch that space. In five years Toowoomba will have it all: International airport, tunnel under the range for quick access to Brisbane. That region already has many little airfields.Toowoomba may as well be Birdsville for it's lack of proper RPT...-

Minimum monthly plans get phased out and replaced by the more expensive ones.
I was moments away from signing up with Southern Phone when Telstra convinced my wife (while simultaneously visiting our regional Teltra shop) to sign up for a two-year plan with them. We were given the impression that it included our mobiles. Not so. We ended up paying mobs more than Southern would have cost. It is in the interests of the Telcos to keep us confused.

"Dirty solar"?
It's all a conspiracy!

I remember when the likes of John Howard dismissed the potential of renewable energy. A few short years later (with a little kick start from government) we are starting to wean ourselves off fossil fuel. Along way to go yet.... The advent of solar has probably reduced the need for 2 power stations. Nev -
Right on Marty. I've been told several stories by power company people. That my surplus power only heats up the nearest transformer and never gets onto the network. That they pay us the same rate as they pay for coal-fuelled electricity.I have trouble understanding how they can pay people less for the power they put back into the grid than the person pays for what they take off the grid. I can understand WHY they do it, because they're a bunch of ****s and they don't want renewables to succeed.Better-qualified advice has our little roof-top panels making quite an impact miles from source, so the power companies are getting current locally on the cheap. Perhaps the main problem is that their system was never set up to cater for intermittent solar feed in.
Perhaps things will play out like they have with Telstra, who still must maintain the cable network while consumers are shopping around and using various wireless services. As more of us generate more of our own electricity, cable-access fees will increase.

In fact a few of us can boast that we part-own a Bugatti! (Porsches and Beemers are common as muck these days.)A lot of us here have been following the 101p for quite some time now. Many contributed to the cause as well. I picked up the t shirt at airventure 2011. Almost ready to fly.-

So true, Nev. Some people specialise so much they end up knowing everything there is to know about nothing much at all....there are a lot of other things you miss out learning about because there is a specialising element to all knowledge. You can know a lot about a little or a little about a lot. Nev -
As well as following the advice above, get involved in maintaining your own mechanical things- from your wipper-snipper to your car. There are plenty of resources on the net to help. This way you might find (quite inexpensively) if you have an aptitude for the work.So here I am. A 30 year old pencil pusher getting into the aviation thing. One problem I have is that I don't know the top of an engine from the bottom...-

I've been searching for that ground-crew endorsement, Ocsar. Maybe it'll be included in the new Ops Manual.... drive the family car down to the strip and wait for my brother to turn final then shine the lights down the strip and accelerate like hell once he passed overhead to get some light onto the strip...-

Any other country would drop the idealogical claptrap and save their national airline from being sold off....Sad to think that another Aussie Icon may go, in fact it is sad to realise that it is our only icon...We need a statesman as a PM.

Good advice, sain. I bought the smallest system (1.5kW) in the belief it would cover my largest single user of power- a water pump. The rating is probably based on absolutely ideal conditions. The most mine produces is 1200 watts at midday on a clear midsummer day. I should have bought a 3 or 5 kW system to cover the rest of the time....The solar stuff is like anything really. Do some research yourself so you've got something to judge the amount of ******** your getting fed by the sales droids. Have a good idea what your daily usage is like, roughly how many peak sun hours you get in your location (check BOM site for data), roughly what size you want. the size and the peak sun will give you a rough average for how many kWh a given sized system will produce every day (probably better in summer, worse in winter obviously). Check brands of panels and inverters - some are better than others. As a grid-connect system we are paid very little for the power we export, so most of our heavy use is during the middle of the day, so that we are using our own power first. Pretty easy to do with timers.

I agree with you sentiments, Oscar. It would do our movement good to achieve even some of what you suggest, but these changes would need to be led by someone with the wisdom of Solomon, the tact of a diplomat, the energy and enthusiasm of a teenager and hide as thick as a hippo. Do we have anyone with those attributes?OK, I believe it's not so much a case of nudging into GA territory as developing a 'social profile' in which we are seen as being of some value to the community - and therefore having a level of community support for our activities including gaining community support to NOT lose local regional airfields. The GA fleet is slowly dying by attrition of the older aircraft, and I'm not sure that there's anything much under $200k new (other than a J430, perhaps) on the market to replace them. If our aircraft (well, some of them) can start to fill a small gap in the level of services to regional areas, I think we'll all accrue a bit of kudos in the minds of the local community and therefore gain their support. That can't, surely, harm the cause of every recreational pilot/operator in terms of having access to reasonable facilities etc.? -
RAA= recreational, not commercial. We've had enough problems nudging into GA territory. Why go looking for trouble?

The board of QANTAS might be a good example. Presumably they will lead by example and shed massive numbers of management jobs, and the board will surely take massive pay cuts to match their performance.

Good idea Kaz. I'm sure the boys will look at that suggestion, but they are currently too busy to add new features....Ozrunways every time for me. The only thing I miss is an option I can select where the moving map display automatically goes to the chart with the best resolution as the flight progresses across boundaries.Kaz

Bu99er! That will become the next sh!tfight. The RF side of the transponders is somewhat much different I am afraid…I doubt they will ever been cheap but I am sure in the not too distant future if you want to fly over 5000 ft you will be required to have one…got a spare 2 grand or so lying around? -
Very interesting thread, but a bit over my head. Sounds like we are on the cusp of an affordable (but not certified) traffic avoidance system. All that's missing is inexpensive transponders. I know the AusRunways fellas are a bit snowed under at present, but that might be a good direction to take their software.

The Ulysses people are a bit like us. Their AGM is a moving feast, so that they can do what they love to do: travel.
Perhaps RAAus could set up HQ at a regional centre then go on the road with courses, conferences etc. That way many far-flung clubs could get a boost from hosting a gathering.
