Hi Danny,
Am I correct in thinking you have fitted a CARR voltage regulator/rectifier to your Rotax 9???
If so - please advise;
- On your experince with the devise
- Part number used
- Supplier
Thanks SkippyDiesel (Sean)

Hi Area-51,
I see that you are a Europa pilot. Perchance it is powered by a Rotax and utilises a constant speed propeller?
Is so, I would like to compare performance and engine/prop management, between your aircraft & my Sonex/Rotax 912ULS😈

Like the europa, the Sonex will eat most comparative aircraft in the sky. It has fantastic visibility from the cockpit, a strong +6/-4 spar and is nimble and responsive. It does not have the same level of stability as the europa, so it is great for aero's due to its inherent slight instability. I am told the Sonex can be tiring to hand fly long distances without an AP due to this; its an aircraft that requires to be piloted constantly while airborne... Both aircraft have their pluses and minuses... straight line they are about the same when using a 912/914. That being said the europa has a +12 ultimate rating on the spar, is highly nimble in experienced hands, and will do aero's quite comfortably if requested; but was purpose designed specifically for distance touring with short field capabilities.
Wing root flares would give the Sonex slightly better low speed and bank turn performance and capitalise on the low vortex wing tip design advantages. Fowler flaps would enhance stall speed performance. The factory canopy frame requires beefing up as well to prevent distortion and inflight departure.

All interesting comments.
My Sonex is a plans built Legacy (A). It features significant departures from a standard Sonex (B) ;
- Rotax 912ULS/Airmaster Constant Speed Prop
- 30L Wing Tanks + 40L Fuselage Header Tank (95-97 L usable).
- Tracey O'Brien toe brakes
- Custom full swivel tailwheel
- Custom elevator trim wheel
- Custom engine cowling
- Cowl flap (off at the moment due to actuator issues)
- Solid riveted throughout
- Under seat storage
I have researched "Wing root flares" - to date there is minimal/no documented advantage. This may be due to the design of those fitted or it might just be they will never have much benefit.
"The factory canopy frame requires beefing up as well to prevent distortion and inflight departure" Mine seems to be fine. Surprisingly little distortion (or have I adapted?) as for inflight departure - can't see that happening unless incorrectly latched. The only change I have made, is to use a clear polycarbonate rather than the factory supplied tinted.
"......its an aircraft that requires to be piloted constantly while airborne" True! however this was also true for my Zephyr. I have found that experince results in a level of intuitive handling, ie I don't seem to notice the near constant adjustments needed to fly straight & level, bit like riding a bike. One day I may fit an autopilot but for for now she flies just fine - planning a Sydney to Perth flight.
Do you have an Airmaster (or similar) prop? - I would like to compare management notes😈

Are you referring to the Beal Aircraft Dubbo message? - if so, I apologise if I did not respond to you personally - I did contact Beal (thanks) and received an estimate for the work - about $400. I mentioned this in the open conversation.

Got you!
So what's the Envelope icon for?

The Bell?

Ref: Sonex to Rotax 9 engine mount/conversion. This is a Mk1 Sonex mount. Distinguished from the Mk 2 by having two rails as apposed to four. It was installed, now removed, so has some marks however engine never started. Kit is complete with rubbers & bolts.
NOTE: I am selling just the two cast aluminium parts plus rubbers, washers & bolts (not the rest of the engine bed/frame)
Make me a fair offer & they are yours (plus postage)
I can be contacted through: [email protected] and/or 0499030659

Hi JG3 - Just re read your article(s) on propeller performance/comparisons. I have been trying to get some informed comment on CS/IFA props (you may have seen my thread "Prop Selection" on the topic. I would be very interested in your observations on the matter.
You will find in the aforementioned "thread" my rational for going down this particular line of enquiry - in short - terrible home field, requiring short field TO/Landings, ever time. Ground adjustable set for advantage climb. Resulting in, expected, reduced cruise performance. My wish to explore options to retain excellent existing TO & climb out performance, while significantly improving cruise. Seems to me a CS/IFA is the only way I can have my cake and eat it. I guess the question is by how much (if at all) can I expect to gain in cruise.
Aircraft: ATEC Zephyr, motivated by Rotax 912 ULS through a Fiti 2 blade ground adjustable. Note: Fiti - couldn't be happier - very smooth, quiet running.

Hi Robin,
Like you I am not too sue of the correct contact system however I hope you get this:
My phone number is 0499030659 & my direct email is scangriffin@ bigpond.com.au (note: the spelling scan is correct and accidently similar to my name) I am located about 3 km from The Oaks airfield NSW just west of Camden.
Let me know if you get this - the last person I replied too gave no indication of having received my communique
I will appreciate a chat almost any time.

How are you going with your Airmaster/Sensenich CS propeller system ?
-
Sorry mate - dont seem to have your contact details any more. I would be very interested to talk to anyone with CS/IFA prop experience & insight.
If the offer is still open please email me on [email protected]

Hi Kyle, With reference to the Rotax 912 throttle linkage modifications - May I request that you add me to your list of interested purchasers.

Hi Robin,
By way of introduction:
I am not sure when/how I came across your article on the development & exploits of VH-SGS but it must be many years back - about the time you put her up for sale.
As I have mentioned in my Forum conversation - what fascinates me is what you have achieved with so little in the way of power and what must be a fundamentally sound aerodynamic/airframe design but otherwise unspectacular looking aircraft (no offence to Mr Monnett).
As a person of European (rather than N American) leaning, I admire small nippy economical sports cars rather than the big V8's. Your adaption of the Soneri seems to neatly fit into this philosophy.
Over the years I have "measured" all small aircraft performance claims against VH-SGS and with but a few exceptions, come to the conclusion that they are at best wishful thinking but most likely just lies.
Some of my Forum correspondents think I am obsessed with speed - not so. In aircraft, I see speed and hp/fuel consumption as a measure of efficiency. I dont necessarily want to fly at max cruise speed all the time but like the idea of trying to get my aircraft as efficient as it can be, within its physical limitations.
I have written to you befor asking if you know of VH-SGS current situation( A Forum member suggested she was not much used) and would the owner be interested in selling.
Regards
Sean Griffin / Skippydiesel
