Ultralights,
Just a quick correction of your physics. Force = mass x acceleration.
The effects of an impact between a drone and an airplane are like this example.
Miles Tugo and Ben Travlun are riding in a bus at highway speed on a nice summer day when an unlucky bug splatters onto the windshield. Miles and Ben begin discussing the physics of the situation. Miles suggests that the momentum change of the bug is much greater than that of the bus. After all, argues Miles, there was no noticeable change in the speed of the bus compared to the obvious change in the speed of the bug. Ben disagrees entirely, arguing that that both bug and bus encounter the same force, momentum change, and impulse. Who do you agree with?
Ben Travlun is correct.
The bug and bus experience the same force, the same impulse, and the same momentum change. This is contrary to the popular (though false) belief which resembles Miles' statement. The bug has less mass and therefore more acceleration; occupants of the very massive bus do not feel the extremely small acceleration. Furthermore, the bug is composed of a less hardy material and thus splatters all over the windshield. Yet the greater "splatterability" of the bug and the greater acceleration do not mean the bug has a greater force, impulse, or momentum change.
In most cases, a collision between a drone and ans airplane will not cause serious damage to the airplane, UNLESS the collision is will the intake of a jet turbine engine, then we will have something similar to the ingestion of a bird. Hudson River here we come!

Chocks, my boy. Chocks.
Who ever decreed that mag checks had to be done on the edge of the runway? Why can't they be done at your parking spot before you taxi off to the runway holding point?

The plane might have had a ground-up restoration ten years ago, but machining the drums and/or fitting new brake shoes might have been overlooked. Another thing to consider is how much use the plane has had since 2006. If it has spent a lot of time sitting on its Dunlops, it is possible that the brake shoes have hardened, so the amount of friction between them and the drum is reduced.
Your comment that there is a high spot makes me suspect that the drums could do with machining. If you can, whip them off and take them to an auto shop - but tell the operator that the drums are off a post-WWl vintage car.
While the drums are off, inspect the surface of the brake shoes. If they are shiny, then the judicious application of a fine-toothed metal file will get rid of the degraded surface and expose good friction material.
The braking system does not work independently on each side. It's both or none. The brakes are only supposed to be used to slow the airplane to walking speed during its landing run. Even with brand new shoes and drums, the engine will produce enough Force to overcome brake friction above 1500 RPM and off you'll go.
If you are looking for a simple, low cost fix, then machining the drums and filing the surface of the shoes is the way to go.

In that case, may your runways be long.Except on takeoff, presumably
Nice amendment to your avatar!

Congratulations. A very nice job. May all your take-offs and landings be a 1:1 ratio, and may the wind be ever behind you.

Camden hours 0800 - 1600 every day.
I think the Aeropup would be a good choice. With folding wings you might even be able to strike a deal for hangar space. Failing that, folf it up. Drag it onto a trailer and then park the trailer in the carpark.

This private museum: http://www.camdenmuseumofaviation.com.au/
Has a restored Beaufighter 156 Mk21 (RAAF No A8-186), and a complete, never been attached to an aircraft, cockpit forming the front of A8-386.

I see that FT's design preserves Strayan heritage by displaying the pie n sauce. Youngsters these days wouldn't know a good aussie pie if they trod on one.

That's taking "landing over 50' object" a bit too literally.

Yeah! CASA puts lots of effort into helping aviation. Not like the FAA who puts out a whole heap of junk like this:
(I just grabbed the first thing that caught my eye. It's old, but makes my point)

One would think that those involved in the rural industry in the New England electorate would be strong supporters of General Aviation. After all, who was it that spread their bountied superphosphate in the 50's and 60's which made their profits from wool and meat?

Examine that photo carefully.
1. There are no scrapes and gouges in the ground anywhere in 360 degrees of it, although there's possibly a wheel to the left rear
2. The wing tips and tailplane are in proper relationship with each other.
3. The instrument panel/firewall appears not to have suffered rearward acting force.
I can't see evidence of a "plummeting" motion prior to its reaching the ground. I can't see evidence of a flat spin, either.
I wonder if the aircraft suffered an in-flight fire and the pilot managed to land but was overcome by fumes and not able to escape the aircraft.

Ozfergie,1. Aircraft Condition Report- Who pays for this buyer or seller?
- Is it usual practice to get one of these before making an offer?
- Any indication of cost?
- How best to find an L2 (interstate)?
2. Indication of cost to fit a transponder to a J160D
1. You are going to be outlaying a wad of money when purchasing a plane. If you were going to spend the same sort of monry on a car, wouldn't you invest in an inspection? Caveat emptor
2. Only wise men get a pre-purchase inspection. A fool and his money are soon parted.
3. Work on the hourly cost a LAME would charge for regular maintenance. Allow about 8 hours for the inspection of the airplane and books, plus the time to write the report. The big variable is the out-of-pocket expenses (travel and accomodation to the location of the plane)
4. L2 or LAME interstate is a hard one. Personally, and without meaning to offend L2's, I'd be asking a LAME with experience with the engine fitted, and experience in the method of construction of the airframe and covering.

NO Flying Dog. You didn't kill the topic. I only had a quick visit here last night as I was working. I jumped back on as soon as I was able to this morning.
I salute you for coming forward and forcefully putting your case. As a retired General Duties policeman, and a holder of Christ's principles, I know exactly where you are coming from with your comments about the actions of Society expressed through its minions in the Health and Law Enforcement areas.
I always felt sorry for the poor suffering souls I had to escort off to hospital and see the way that health care workers treated them as just another inconvenience. I always felt that I was being sent in to a situation merely because I was a big boofy bloke who could wrestle anyone into submission. I tried to inform myself about the gentle ways to gain the confidence and trust of those who were in "another place", and it is amazing that by showing a bit of empathy, I was able to do what I had to do without resorting to State sanctioned violence.
I ended up being discharge "Medically Unfit" because of depression and anxiety. I'm lucky. The Black Dog only slobbered on me. But I still get saddened (minor depression?) when I suffer failures. Now I am a bit concerned because last night I felt really happy, and I couldn't find a good reason for feeling that way.
When I started this topic I meant it to be a vehicle for people to discuss this major problem. I'm glad it has let some people be open and forthright. I hope we can keep up the conversation.

I'm very happy! I've at least started a conversation amongst a group of people who are, hopefully, going to encounter this problem exhibiting itself in others, not themselves. We have shown that we care about our partners in crime here on this site by talking about what makes us happy (flying) and making big efforts to pass on our experiences and well wishes as the case may be.
It is obvious that planet47 is an active practitioner in mental health care, and provides sound information from the professional's side. But I think it is incumbent on all of us to learn how to deal with a victim of mental illness. There are more of us laymen than there are professionals.
A professional can only deal with a limited number of cases, and for their own mental stability must be professionally stand-offish. They cannot expend the amount of empathy that a friend can. That's where we must learn more about the application of Mental Health First Aid. After all, each of us is more likely to encounter the early expression mental illness than we are to encounter a heart, asthma attack or physical trauma.

But don't you agree that the people who we as laymen can support are the psychologically ill, and the medically trained people should deal with the physiologically ill.
A psychologically ill person should be able to receive counselling and support in his/her normal environment before the need comes for emergency intervention.
We have come a long way in the past 50 years as a society to accepting certain conditions as a normal part of the human condition. We don't hide Downes Syndrome people, nor those with cerebral palsy. We don't make fun of the ill and infirm. We don't banish those with AIDS or MS, and I think that we accept that people with different sexual patterns are simply that.
It's about time we campaigned to let everyone know that mental illness is not to be borne alone. We laypeople might not be able to cure it, but at least we can support sufferers while they strive to get back to "normal"

What Planet47 said is a true representation of actions that can be taken under the Mental Health Act NSW. However, and there's always an "however", have you ever had to convey a person to an EU in your role as a police person or ambo?
For starters, police and ambos are called in by GPs because the patient in these situations is usually violent. That's why you call in the big, burly copper. Once you get them to the EU, the staff there are usually flat out dealing with assault victims, drunks and druggies. So the police or ambos are stuck with guarding the patient until hospital security takes over. The GP, of course, has long since pulled on his PJs and gone to bed.
The thing is that the people who would normally need to be handled this way are not very likely to be depressives. The ones who need to be brought to the EU this way are usually long term psychotics whose illness is more likely to be abnormal brain physiology, ie a real medical problem.
The people we are talking about, who are suffering from depression, are suffering from a psychological problem caused by their being overwhelmed by adverse circumstances. These people don't need to be dragged off to a Psych Unit. Hopefully, they can be helped by counselling and the support of their friends. I hesitate to say "family and friends" as sometimes family can irritate the depression.

23 year-old mother takes her own life and that of her 2 year-old child at Maroubra in Sydney on Thursday evening.
With all the Social Services we fund, why does this happen?
