One of my daughters is currently living there with her soldier husband. She has to cross the runway every time she goes into Spain to do some shopping (weekly, got nothing else to do). It doesn't seem to be a problem and as far as I know, there's never been a plane verses car incident of any sort. Don't know about terrorists but.
