The de Havilland DHC-4 Caribou aircraft provided invaluable service to the RAAF for 45 years, the longest record of constant RAAF operational service of any aircraft type to date. In 1972, a RAAF Caribou crashed attempting to cross the treacherous Papua New Guinea mountains.
