My Corby has an Aeropower (VW conversion) engine. The primary ignition is a Slick 4216 magneto, which will require a 500 hr inspection in 12 - 18 months. It appears the 4216 is no longer produced or supported. Champion's current 4 cylinder magnetos are the 4300 series, for which 500 hr inspection kits are available. Has anyone with a VW conversion encountered this? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

They're on the list Skip. Currently Aerovee seem to be offering dual electronic ignition. I've posted to the Corby owners group & will try the Sonex owners/ users group too.  Great Plains (VW conversions) were an active supplier of engines & parts but appear to have shut down.

Slick Aircraft Products L-1037 4200/6200 series magneto and maintenance and overhaul manual describes in great detail how 500 hr inspection and if/when required - overhauls - are done.

Aircraft spruce has POWERUP replacement parts for slick type magnetos - some match the 4216 Champion parts list numbers. One would imagine or hope these are the most commonly replaced parts needed.

Aircraft Replacement Parts & Repair Kits | PowerUp Ignition

Though one page says:

We do not provide parts for the 4000, 400/600 or 4200/6200 series

But they clearly do. Probably basic parts common to other models.

Slick Service Letter SL1-10 details to replace 4200 series with 4300 series (direct replacement) and that parts would discontinue on DEC 31 2011.

Maybe the 4200 series was a February 29th joke or a SNS (Saturday Night Special). I wonder what engine they were commonly seen on. Or maybe they weren't commonly seen (SNS?) and thus the reason to discontinue support. Were the 4200 series just the FORD EDSEL of the magneto world.

Given that the total usage in your plane Bathurst Bill might be low, perhaps the 500 hr inspection passes muster by the book and no parts are actually required. A 500 hour inspection is not an overhaul (but yes, could potentially become one if parts are wearing out).
