willedoo Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Some interesting figures on United States aircraft numbers lost during the Vietnam War. Originally sourced from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircraft_losses_of_the_Vietnam_War), the figures have been simplified to include aircraft from all four branches of service combined, and operational as well as combat losses. Variants are listed as the one type, eg. F-4 includes RF-4's; C-47 includes AC-47's, C-117's etc.. Fixed wing losses in descending order of numbers: 765 McDonnell F-4 Phantoms 476 Cessna O-1 Bird Dogs 382 Republic F-105 Thunderchiefs 373 Douglas A-4 Skyhawks 260 Douglas A-1 Skyraiders 243 North American F-100 Super Sabres 169 Vought F-8 Crusaders 106 Vought A-7D Corsairs 104 Cessna O-2 Skymasters 80 North American Rockwell OV-10 Broncos 65 Lockheed C-130 Hercules 64 Grumman A-6 Intruders 56 Martin B-57 Canberras 53 Fairchild C-123 Providers 43 Douglas C-47 Skytrains 39 McDonnell RF-101 Voodoos 31 Boeing B-52 Stratofortress 27 North American RA-5 Vigilantes 23 North American T-28 Trojans 22 Douglas A-26 Invaders 22 Cessna A-37 Dragonflys 19 De Havilland Canada C-7 Caribous 14 Convair F-102 Delta Daggers 14 Lockheed F-104 Starfighters 14 Douglas E/RB-66 Destroyers 11 General Dynamics F-111 Aardvarks 9 Northrup F-5 Freedom Fighters 9 Douglas A-3 Skywarriors 8 Beechcraft QU-22 Pave Eagles 6 Fairchild AC-119 Stingers 5 Grumman OV-1 Mohawks 5 Douglas EF-10 Skynights 4 Lockheed P-2 Neptunes 4 Grumman C-1 Traders 4 Grumman S-2 Trackers 4 Grumman HU-16 Albatross 3 Grumman E-1 Tracers 3 Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers 2 Lockheed P-3 Orions 2 Lockheed SR-71A Blackbirds 2 Lockheed EC-121 Batcats 2 Lockheed C-141 Starlifters 2 Grumman E-2 Hawkeyes 1 Lockheed C-5A Galaxy 1 Lockheed U-2C Dragon Lady 1 Grumman C-2 Greyhound 1 Grumman TF-9 Cougar 1 Cessna U-3B Blue Canoe 1 De Havilland Canada U-6A Beaver 1 Helio U-10D Courier 1 Boeing KB-50 Superfortress Small numbers compared to WW2 losses, but still a lot of aircraft when the figures are condensed. During the war, the United States had two pilot aces ( the other three aces were RIO's), and North Vietnam claimed sixteen aces. Cheers, Willie. Â
TAA Student Pilot Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Be interesting to know how many were due to enemy action and how many were accidents/shooting each other down/weather related. Â
