Aren't most Lycomings hydraulic tappets nowadays. My o320 is and it never needs touching.

They have been for a long time. They also have camshaft problems, especially on motors not used very often, and there are specified limits on valve guide wear for all motors. Your hydraulic lifters can run out of range and not be able to maintain safe running clearance. Dirt in the oil system can stop them working properly. They won't pump up and you lose power.
