  1. Very good question!

Obviously, the connection is not immediately obvious, but I will be doing a number of talks at schools all around the country in order to promote STEM. It's interesting to hear your view on the future of careers... the data that has been correlated by myself and a few contacts at universities around the country has shown that jobs within the discipline are expected to sky rocket over the next 20 years, with over 650,000 jobs in the technology field alone needed in that time.

To be perfectly frank, I don't believe such a broad brush approach is the best way to be promoting STEM, but after a lot of thinking and research done by myself and my team, we came to the conclusion that this is the best way to leverage this current opportunity with the message. This way we manage to reach the largest number of people in as small a space as possible.

    Cheers,

    Liam

8 months of planning have lead up to this challenge. One me, one Bristell LSA and one country to be conquered to spread the message of STEM subject awareness among school students nationwide. I take off on September 8th from YBSU for this awesome journey. Would love to start a discussion with everyone about their experiences flying in remote/outback areas!

Long story short, I started flying at 14 and have self-funded all my training so far. Will be using RPC with Nav and CSU, as well as RPL for CTA/CTR for the trip. I have a great team of people and sponsors behind me and we're looking forward to a great adventure.

Keep up to date with everything at here !

    Cheers,

  3. Sorry for the clickbait but I'm sure someone will steal the title off me in a few weeks...

So yeah. Youngest RPC holder in Australia. Turned 15 a few weeks ago. All self funded with 3 part time jobs on top of school and assignments and social stuff. Thank goodness its over...

What is some stuff you guys would recommend doing being such a fresh pilot? Whats one thing you really enjoyed doing when you had just gotten your licence?

I'm planning on doing a sunrise flight in the school holidays...

    Cheers,

  4. Thanks for your feedback Rotatingturbine. I'm sure those procedures you have listed are correct for YBSU, but there does seem to be some significant differences to class D operations at Bankstown/Camden from what have read over the last couple of days. It seems that every class D airport makes up there own procedures - the lack of standardization if puzzling and confusing to a student pilot. For example:"CALLSIGN is overhead (VFR reporting point), (altitude), (atis receipt), (any additional information, over water, over land etc.), requesting inbound clearance."

At other class D airports AFAIK, there is no need to explicitly ask for 'clearance' (i.e. just say 'inbound')... it is implied and granted if your tower responds with your call sign.

"ALLSIGN, make (circuit leg) for RWxx. Report (circuit leg).

Ok so we are cleared to operate into the Class D at our assigned altitude, and we are able to descend to circuit height if able. Once you report on that leg, they will generally issue landing clearance. Remember, you are cleared to descend to circuit height as soon as you are in the zone."

At other class D airports AFAIK, when told to report at a certain leg you, you must descend and be at circuit height before entering the zone, unless told otherwise.

    "CALLSIGN, roger.

Cleared to enter Class D at altitude specified in inbound call. Must stay in current track until cleared otherwise. "

At other class D airports AFAIK, if the call-sign is just acknowledge, then you are cleared to commence descent and must enter the zone at circuit height on the appropriate leg.

Pretty confused about this whole process!!!

Haha. Yeah it is pretty confusing. The lack of standardisation is ridiculous and confusing as it is very hard to learn the 'standard' procedures... if they even exist. Good luck. I think it just depends on your airport...

  5. Ok so this all seems complicated but it just takes time.

    Inbound

Check VTC for an inbound reporting point for the zone, usually a purple diamond. Im going to use my home airport (YBSU) as an example.

"Sunshine Coast Tower, CALLSIGN Inbound Details."

    "CALLSIGN, Sunshine Coast Tower"

"CALLSIGN is overhead (VFR reporting point), (altitude), (atis receipt), (any additional information, over water, over land etc.), requesting inbound clearance."

Here you will usually get one of four replies.

CALLSIGN, make (circuit leg) for RWxx. Report (circuit leg).

Ok so we are cleared to operate into the Class D at our assigned altitude, and we are able to descend to circuit height if able. Once you report on that leg, they will generally issue landing clearance. Remember, you are cleared to descend to circuit height as soon as you are in the zone.

CALLSIGN, parachuting ops 2nm north of your position, do not penetrate Class D zone, retry in 10 minutes.

Even though they have acknowledged your callsign, you are NOT cleared into the Class D. Follow the instruction and call again.

Aircraft calling, heavy traffic at present time, try again at (Time xx)

Once again, not able to fly into Class D. Try again at the given time.

    CALLSIGN, roger.

Cleared to enter Class D at altitude specified in inbound call. Must stay in current track until cleared otherwise. Wait for clearance for circuit direction or landing clearance. Eg, if I reported inbound at 1500 over water, I must stay with that track and altitude.

The important thing to remember is to listen, and never read back an instruction you cannot comply with or don't fully understand. Thats the only way you can get into trouble generally.

I'm only a 15y/o student pilot so if someone spots a mistake, please say so.

  6. Hey all,

Thought I'd give this a try to see if anyone has any contacts for work experience in aviation in SE Qld. I live on the Sunshine Coast, about an hour north of Brisbane. I have been rejected by a few major companies (airservices, QF, VA, Rex, flight school) so I thought i'd ask if anyone knew of any other places to ask. I was originally hoping for a spot in the jumpseat for a few flights, but apparently they don't do that anymore, even with an ASIC. I'm really hoping for anything at YBBN, YBSU or even YBCG to do with aviation, even if it is just scanning boarding passes, I would probably find it fun.

I am about 3/4 through my RAA cert, and have a Red ASIC if that helps. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Liam

  7. Hi Liam,The Sling 2 is a great aircraft. Flew solo not so long ago on my 15th birthday out of ybsu, and still have a long way to go.I also started when I was 14. Soak it in and enjoy!

Hey Sean, thanks for the reply. I'm assuming your with the Aero Club? I went there once or twice but found it was a bit cheaper to go out to Caloundra with GoFly. Has your experience been good? Which instructor? Sorry about all the questions.

    Thanks,

    Liam

  8. Hi,

I am a student pilot that has just started training out of YCDR. My instructor told me to get the following:

    Bob Tait Recreation BAK

    Logbook

    ERSA

VTC of YCDR and surrounding areas.

Do you know where any of this stuff can be found? Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Liam

  9. Well done. Liam enjoy it - I like flying the Sling 2 low wing more of a mans aircraft - compared to all the other pussy Cesena types........That should start something for your first post. Enjoy.

Thanks man! I agree. Compared to the Tecnam P92 and Skyhawk I have tried, I much prefer the Sling. Also very sporty...
