Thanks FH, yup aware of their 'interesting handling characteristics' in crosswinds and at the point the tail comes up on T/O. Good friend owns one and if I manage to pick one up I'll be a coward and get time with someone used to them. In the meantime I'm expanding my search for something interesting. Ideally something I can get the wings off in under an hour and service at home every now and then. Actually thinking about picking up a Sapphire (another aircraft that has piqued my interest over the years). In the meantime I'm flying other people's aircraft pretty much every day so I'm not in a desperate rush. Anyone know anyone with a good Sapphire?
If still intersted in a Sapphire - I think there may be one (in a trailer) for sale at The Oaks 😈

The Australian Guru of Europas lives SW Qld somewhere - sorry, I forget his name, someone on the Forum will likly know who I am referring to. Nice bloke, very helpful, knowledgeable about Europas. I think he may have two, one of which may have a Rotax 914😈

Yup think I might be in for a wait. Looking for something with wing fold, always loved the Europa, but maybe a FlySynthesis Storch
Europa is not a wing fold - its similar to a glider. The main spare overlaps & is secured inside the fuselage/cockpit. It's not so easy to do - the few who actually go down this track, build a jig or two, so that the wings can be removed/installed by one person. You will also need a custom designed trailer - started down this track with a 1975 Viscount Supreme caravan - used it to pick up my Sonex.
Performance wise, the Europa and FS Storch are pretty much at opposite ends of the envelop/handling characteristics - interesting choices.😈

Good luck. I spent two years trying to find one.
Almost had two.
Should have bought the first one & fixed the issues, such is life!
The other was pulled from sale by the owner/builder, after accepting my offer - he had successful cataract surgery and decided he wanted to continue flying.
The few others I considered, did not make the grade, for one reason or another.
It wasn't a total loss;
I learnt a lot - always good and now don't trust aircraft sales persons (even worse than the car variety).
Eventually purchased an all metal one; Sonex Legacy/Rotax 912ULS 😈

Just messaged you F10.
"The gauze is so fine they recon it will even stop water bubbles?...."
I do knot know if the Hengst style filters (as shown) stop water. In fact I doubt it.
I believe this type of filter was/is intended as a pre filter in diesel applications (found on many European small diesels).
They have transparent casings to facilitate easy inspection for caught contaminants. In the diesel applications, I have seen, the filter is in an easy location to see/inspect.
Are;
- Supposed to be discarded when condition indicates but can be cleaned (I use carby cleaner & compressed air for my small engines but replace for aircraft application).
- Easy to replace - small amount of forethought will deliver spill free replacement.
- Relatively cheap to replace - keep a spare or two on hand.

Thanks Neil for all the trouble you have gone to.
I am a tad dim on what the transponder actually does (something about being interrogated/responds with ID/Alt/Location/Heading)-
Trig TT22 (ModeS) new (like aircraft), been professionally set up/certified, so all should be okay. I just turn it on before TO and assume all will be well..
I have three GPS systems, operating in the aircraft . As far as I know, none certified.
In my current aircraft I have only had one instance when ATC contacted me (had to SQUAWK CODE given) .
In my last, I had several instances where ATC either contacted me or more often, contacted other aircraft (usually IFR) to warn them of my presence.
I have a panel mounted iPad Mini with OzRunways & extra GPS antenna, so have some traffic displayed.
If I understand you correctly;
- The Skyecho could be configured to work on ADSB IN (only) & "paint" onto my iPad, any ADSB OUT aircraft, within a 20 NM radius of my position. Without ADSB OUT I would not appear on other aircrafts systems.
- I am confused about using Skyecho IN/ OUT with TT22 also operating - is this functionally okay or not?
- I could just get a PingUSB from UAvionix. This will display ADSB IN on my iPad but as no OUT capability, would be as for Skyecho above.
- Seems to me that if Skyecho & Trig TT22 can both be active at the same time , this would be the way to go.
-
Thanks Neil,
Veeeeeeeeeery interesting!
If I understand correctly -
I would have to turn off my Trig TT22 when using the SkyEcho. Presume this would be to prevent two (confusing) signals going ATC/another aircraft.
With the SkyEcho (IN) I would be getting additional inflight information on the location of other aircraft .
The SkyEcho's (OUT) broadcast integrity is below that of my Trig TT22 and there is a question over whether ATC monitors it or not.
So I must decide if the benefit of "seeing" other aircraft displayed on my iPad, outweighs my current "relationship" with ATC.
-
Hi,
I have Trig TT22 Mode S transponder (out only).
Is the SkyEcho compatible with the above? ie what effect, if any, does carrying the Sky Echo, have on ATC's reading of my existing transponder transmissions?

If you haven't noticed I use facts all the time, annoying as it might be to some. I don't believe in wasting time fixing non existent problems. Rotax is made by humans not DOG. Some of the things they come out with deserve examination because they border on weird. . It's not that they are cheap either. Look at the amount of time spent over Rotax Minutiae on this forum. IF all that is necessary to operate a little plane engine something is wrong because most people won't do it in any case.. (Next you'll say they last very well anyhow) and I think that would also make my point. I've done plenty of hours behind 9xx Motors that I had no control of how they were serviced. People manage to make them rough running in mid range and have cooling and fuel use problems too.. NO engine is perfect, especially the ones with pistons in them. Nev
Nev:
Your "facts" may sometimes be correct but all to often, not relevant to the matter under discussion.
The statement above is a prime example
What has the above statement, got to do with my sale of Hengst fuel filters????

Ridicule me and preserve your FACT FREE zone. Less filter area means it will block quicker . I also believe it is good to THINK about things. What's Inside every oil filter? You should have cut many open by now. Wavy treated Paper. Injection requires fine filtration . The filter you're promoting is fine for some applications.. Like I said you can see what's going on. Nev
Fuel injection is a whole other ball game - check out the expensive, large, metal cased, fuel filters specified for Rotax iS engines.
Your logic "Less filter area means it will block quicker" is only so good as the projected level of fuel contamination. High contamination (poor quality/refueling practise) the filter with less area will block quicker, no argument. If this is your concern, get a bigger filter. If on the other hand, take care with what you put in your fuel tank, these filters are more than up to the job.
In the 10 + or so years I used these Hengst filters, on my first Rotax 912ULS & since in serval ground based machines, never came close to a blockage, ergo filter catchment surface area more than adequate for the job & my refueling technique.
Hengst H 102 WK & H 103 WK filters are used by several European light aircraft makers - ergo the factory find performance to be adequate for job.
These filters are also used, as a prefilter, in a number of fuel injected European vehicles eg Mercedes cars/light commercials
"Ridicule me ..........."
Exaspiraton is not ridicule, its a level of annoyance.
".....and preserve your FACT FREE zone."
On what basis do you feel it's appropriate to attack my integrity??
Make amends - purchase a few filters😈

These filters don't have the surface area of the other type with the wavy treated paper element. It's done with something to make it waterproof.. You can see what's going on in there though. Nev
Predictable as ever Nev
To the best of my knowledge concertina/wavy paper filter media fuel filters are advised against by most, if not all small aircraft makers.
Reasons:
- There is always the potential for the media to break down
- It's not easy for the pilot to assess the degree of contamination.
Gauze filters are recomend. The selection of in line gauze filters with transparent casing is not great. There are other makers, Baldwin probably has the best selection - same sort of design as the Hengst, however they supply both longer & larger diameter variants (greater filter area) however space may become an issue for some instalatons.
I have used these Hengst filters for about 15 years and found them to be excellent. Always carried a spare but never used it.

Thanks - interesting - I Googled them for supply in Au and came up with a price in the mid $20's - will investigate and adjust if needed.

It's $1500 AUD
If you are referring to the ring mount advertised in the Rotax Owners Forum - it has just dropped from $1K to $950 US = $1456 AU + estimated delivery of somewhere between $2-500AU = a possible $1,956. I think I will hope for a deal like Marty_d's

I was lucky enough to buy a second hand, but unused, one for $300 a couple years ago.
Now thats what I am after - did you use it?
-
$1.5K US is going to work out to be around $3k AU - this is a speculative purchase ie the conversion from bed to ring mount may/may not happen - I can't justify $3k on a possibility.
-
Thanks for that. $1K US before shipping, could end up being $25K AU - bit steep for may pocket.

Fairly sure that there are some for sale in the Rotax Owners Forum https://www.rotax-owner.com/en/rotax-forum

Hi Garath,
Yes they are a new /unused /in box with screws etc - My research suggests the (negotiable) price I am asking.
NOTE: Most of the ones you will Google are not the posative lock type as mine is😈
