Forget the transponder in forced landings?

Tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't a transponder that doesn't let you select an emergency code quickly, somewhat under-designed? Or very badly designed? Aren't these miniaturised instruments letting pilots down somewhat?

It's not the primary role of a transponder to be used as an emergency locator. There's other apparatus that does that.

Just remember to fly the plane first and worry about that other stuff as time and situation permits.
