Yenn Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 The usual AN bolts we use have a tolerance inn their sizing. You would not expect an AN 4 to be 0.125" in diameter. You can get AN173, 174, or 175 bolts which are close tolerance and exactly 0.125 for nominal 1/4". They are usually used where there is a mainly shear connection, such as wing spar attachments. Have a look at Aircraft Spruce catalogue for a quick description of most things to do with aircraft, it is available on line.
old man emu Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 Yes, the AN 173 to 175 series are used in very particular circumstances as you point out, but for the everyday general fastening of things together, the bit of tolerance in the diameter allowed is about 0.003" (0.0762 mm), or not quite a bee's dick.
